re kink fic: I think it can go either way. I personally prefer it when the kink is incorporated into the story in a way that leaves me with the impression that the author thought it through and picked certain characters for a reason. For example, if you have a John who's into knifeplay, it makes more sense to me to put him with Ronon instead of Rodney, unless the fic is also about getting Rodney past being afraid of knives. For me, the best fic is one that does that AND panders to my love of a given kink.
