Maybe it's just me, but I've always felt like Danny had a latent defensiveness that shows itself as confrontationalism, and this plays off of it really well.
Oh, I definitely think he does. Some of his reactions to Martin come out of that defensiveness, I think--even when he confesses his alcoholism to him in "Risen," he doesn't sound guilty or contrite so much as one step away from punching Martin.
Why aren't real people this interesting?
I think that's why I ended up in literature stuff and not psychology (my original intended profession) *g*
