Hi! For quite some time I've, er, been a fandom lurker? That word is so creepy, but yeah, I don't comment very often for some silly shy reason, but I'm trying to be more social in fandom and wanted to tell you I really like the way you wrote about this episode, with the comments and criticism mixed in with fic and photo, and it's one of the things that's motivating me to speak my thoughts on this season too. So, thanks.

I'm not the only person who kept thinking of "Echoes" in regards to the whale thing, right? Rodney was so giddy about Sam the whale back then, while here he suddenly has a long-running fear of them. I mean, on the list of inconsistencies and annoying things Stargate writers have done over the years, this isn't really that bothersome; it's just the part of me that's in love with narrative continuity wishes that they'd been able to conceive of Rodney's whale-fear earlier in the series. (Or did they and I'm completely missing something here?)

But speaking of writing inconsistencies: I am so with you on being annoyed by the fact that people seemed to think that Rodney reacts terribly in scary situations. And I'm mostly convinced that this is a SGA writer issue, not a character issue. One of those weird situations where I feel like fandom knows the character(s) better than canon does. Does that make sense? I mean, I thought one of the main points waaay back in "Hide and Seek" (which has been proven again and again since then) was that, though he might complain and freak out, when it comes down it Rodney really is quite brave, and I'm convinced his team knows that (and Sam's probably starting to notice it too, or she will).

Anyway. Creepy!John = equal-parts comical and hotter than usual. (Seriously, Flanigan, you're an odd one.) And Ronon's dream was awful, by which I of course mean so good, because. well. that's such an in-character nightmare and John was so fabulously creepy.

I can't express how much this makes me laugh: his "I'm humoring you and being cooperative" expression, which Rodney usually describes as "vacant, kind of like a really dumb Labrador." Oh and this? Mostly, "did I do that?" is followed by running, blood, and Rodney yelling at him. Ahahaha, so, so true. Seriously, without John & Rodney bickering, this show wouldn't be even half as good as it is.

Eek, that was a freakishly long comment, but I re-watched "Doppelganger" yesterday and saw this entry linked on [livejournal.com profile] mckay_sheppard and it all just boosts my hopes that the rest of the season includes episodes as ridiculously fantastic as this one.

Cheers,
Sarah

P.S. OMG MIDDLE-AMERICA JOHN-- I've been imagining a somewhat similar setting as a potential backstory for John, too! And I like the way you wrote your version.
