This was exactly what I was hoping that someone would write for this ep. I like the hug-fics as much as anyone else (that is to say, a lot), but what the episode really called for was some Dave-John interaction. :)
And this, this was more than I could hope for. So beautiful.
It paints such a heart-breaking picture of the Sheppard family, with John being angry and misunderstood and lashing out, and his brother, father and step-mother trying, but ultimately failing, to understand him and his issues.
and though John reminds himself it’s display, because she’s always been theatrical (God, she’d cry whenever John told her how much he hated her, and just... yeah, theatrical) All his stray thoughts about the step-mother *broke* me. He's so wrapped up in his anger at her for taking his mother's place that he can't even think of her as a human being with actual feelings. It can't have been easy for anyone.
Now I want to hug John (even more so than usual), which is hardly surprising, and Dave and Pamela too. That casual cruelty he used as a weapon must have been devastating to experience.
