SPN 4.16; or, this is REALLY why I usually don't write ep reviews

NO NO NO NO NO WHY THE FUCK DID YOU HAVE TO GO KILLING OFF URIEL????? [livejournal.com profile] aesc DISAPPROVES OF THIS VERY VERY VERY STRONGLY.

*heaves* Of course they do it in the episode when my Uriel!appreciation was grounded in more than just my perverse love of people I'm not supposed to like. He's the funniest angel in the goddamn garrison! He's starting to like Sam and Dean, even if he's totally sarcastic about it. WHY DO YOU DO THIS TO ME, WRITERS? SERIOUSLY! COME ON!

Even though I try to make it a policy not to hate on characters... I would have liked it if the culprit was Anna, despite the fact she's probably the obvious suspect, if it isn't a demon: known history of disobedience, questioning authority, that sort of thing. It sounds right up Lucifer's alley.

I will try, I will try to put aside my resentment of Uriel being killed off, because the rest of the episode is so deeply made of awesome. Why, you ask?

Because we got like, what, five times Dean calling him Cas? And I like to think that the angels picked up the habit of calling him that, since Anna and Uriel both use it once.

Because there's another layer in the angel/demon war, and lingering resentment among the host that's responsible for how royally fucked up things have become--why Castiel is being ordered to make Dean torture Alastair even though he really really sincerely wishes he didn't have to.

CASTIEL CASTIEL CASTIEL CASTIEL. I love how much development we got here, his fear, the resolution he's slowly starting to come to. How the People Upstairs have gotten wind of the fact that he's a bit too partial to Dean and think that's compromising his effectiveness, and he clearly resents it, and resents having Uriel in charge of him again.

THERE ARE GIRL ANGELS!

Sam and his fear for Dean, knowing that Dean's busted up and hasn't been himself. I was on the point of becoming truly exasperated with him, but this saved him for me. He knows Dean hasn't been himself since he came back--who would be?--and this is the only way he can see to deal with things, when strength beyond what Dean's physically and psychically capable of is required.(The bloodsucking thing, however, gross. And my distrust in Ruby = 100% renewed.)

And Dean. Dean all the way through, but especially at the end, broken, frightened, overwhelmed, oh my heart. I can't even talk about it.

In my head, just after the fade out, Castiel takes his hand and heals him, and things still suck in astronomical proportions, but there is, for one moment, a lessening of pain.

YES TO WHAT YOU SAID.

I was starting to get all kinds of warm and fuzzy feelings for Uriel, but I had seen last week's previews and knew what was going to happen, I just didn't know how. But still-FUNNIEST ANGEL IN THE GARRISON. How could they kill him off?

And is it really dirtywrong for me to find torturer Dean very very hot? I was ready to hate the torture scenes, but instead I found myself fascinated by them.

Every minute of this ep was awesome. I'm with you on distrusting Ruby. And Castiel, I loved watching him struggle with his doubts. Also loved superpower Sam. Hell, I loved everything about this, except that they didn't show that scene in your head at the end, because I'm really really sure that's what actually happened. ::nods firmly::

[identity profile] tektive.livejournal.com 2009-03-20 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
I agree with you about the Anna part. Honestly I thought it was WAY too predictable to make the "grumpy" angel the traitor. You know, you CAN be a jerk and still be on the good side.

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2009-03-20 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
you CAN be a jerk and still be on the good side.

So true! Most of the good people really aren't terribly nice individuals. Dean himself has been accused of being a dick in the past, Sam has an attitude, Castiel... well, he's becoming less so, maybe, but I get the feeling he can't help it :D

[identity profile] lucythedragon.livejournal.com 2009-03-20 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
"THERE ARE GIRL ANGELS!"

YES. I was happy about this as well. I'm happy they have genders, period. Makes certain things more interesting. XD

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2009-03-20 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
but I had seen last week's previews and knew what was going to happen, I just didn't know how.

I had been thinking maybe Uriel and Castiel were having a serious disagreement about what to do with Dean and Sam, and maybe Uriel had threatened them (especially Dean) and Castiel was all, "okay, I don't think so." But no, instead I get this. WTF, WRITERS.

Castiel's remark about how Uriel is the funniest angel in the garrison (I will never get tired of that) sort of makes me wonder how all the other angels see him... If maybe he's the really earnest, humorless junior officer who takes his work a bit too seriously, even for people who by their natures are supposed to take things seriously.

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2009-03-20 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
Makes certain things more interesting.

And less implausible :D: D :D

And Dean. Dean all the way through, but especially at the end, broken, frightened, overwhelmed, oh my heart. I can't even talk about it.

Why must they torture my beloved Dean so much? I'm beginning to think that the writers on that show might be a little sadistic. Strangely enough, that isn't even what made me sniffle - it was SAM! WTF ARE YOU DOING, SAM?

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2009-03-20 05:25 am (UTC)(link)
SO MUCH flail and heartclenching to go around in this episode.

[identity profile] moonlettuce.livejournal.com 2009-03-20 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes to what you said a thousand times over.

I think this is the episode that killed my brain into little pieces more that any other episode in pretty much any other fandom.

I was all, it can't be Uriel, it can't be Uriel. Bastards! You made it Uriel...

And I'm totally agreeing with the thought that Anna would have been a good choice for the bad guy, if just because I think it would have screwed with Dean's head even more.

And there was something disturbingly hot about Dean when he was torturing Alastair ::g::

(Also, apologies for the random squeeing on your LJ. Hope you don't mind ::grin::)

I think this is the episode that killed my brain into little pieces more that any other episode in pretty much any other fandom.

There was a lot to try to process--the action and all the implications and possibilities. My brain has not been able to sort through them yet. I rewatched the episode this morning and, yeah, still lots of helpless flailing and squeaking and not much useful analysis or attempts to work through everything.

(Also, apologies for the random squeeing on your LJ. Hope you don't mind ::grin::)

Ha ha, no apologies needed! Random squeeing is welcome any day of the week D :D

aesc DISAPPROVES OF THIS VERY VERY VERY STRONGLY.

WORD. In my book, it's sinful to kill funny, grumpy ppl/angels.

Also Castiel being resentful delights me very much- VERY MUCH, INDEED. I have no idea why but when Cas was throwing his slightly clumsy fists around I kind of melted a little- possibly because I think Misha kind of bled through there in that he probably has never been physically violent like that.

And Dean. Dean all the way through, but especially at the end, broken, frightened, overwhelmed, oh my heart. I can't even talk about it.

*siiiiiiiighs* I cannot even imagine his pain- Dean already feels too much. Castiel should really take Dean's hand *nods*.

Heee, I was telling [livejournal.com profile] smilla02 that, according to the canon in my head, Castiel originally was not a soldier in the sense of someone who goes out and does the violent stuff; he was more of a military engineer-type who specialized in devil's traps. In fact, he totally invented them, and was assigned to Earth thousands of years ago to teach them to humans, for purposes of self-defense. Then his orders changed and he ended up staying on at the garrison with Uriel and Anna, and he's never been really comfortable with his new task (and is even less comfortable going around in his new vessel; these take some getting used to). But, orders are orders, so here he is.

Castiel should really take Dean's hand *nods*

OH MY GOD YES, DEFINITELY.

I think they should've kept Uriel around for a few more eps for the suspense and dramatic tension at least.

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2009-03-20 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Well also because of how he is awesome :D

[identity profile] insight2.livejournal.com 2009-03-21 12:32 am (UTC)(link)

I FIND THIS IDEA VERY, VERY HOT *assimilates into my personal canon as well*.

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2009-03-21 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
ME TOO.

In the absence of having him be as smitey as I would wish, I will totally take badassery in other ways :D

[identity profile] insight2.livejournal.com 2009-03-21 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
In the absence of what??!!! Smiting with intellection is a whole 'nother level of BADASSERY.

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2009-03-21 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
Heh, there is something to be said (every now and then) for a good ol' fashioned flaming sword :D

A flaming sword of justice!

[identity profile] insight2.livejournal.com 2009-03-21 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
:DDDD Or the gun of a pagan angel!

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2009-03-21 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
Nnnnnnf, dammit, that gets me every time :D Because it's true.

So I just finished the episode and had to go find the reviews people on my flist had posted. I would just like to say that I agree 100% with your last line. The last few moments before the fade to black I was willing Castiel to heal Dean.

If we both think it happened, it did. Right, right?

(I also scrolled through some comments and I would like to say that your idea of Castiel as more the military engineer type is genius! I may adopt that into my own canon.)

WHY THE FUCK DID YOU HAVE TO GO KILLING OFF URIEL?????

He really should've remembered those donuts. Is that wrong? I'm pretty sure this time that it's wrong.

On the Sam front... I so hope Sam is just using Ruby's blood to A) give him strength to save Dean (and, by extension) the world, and B) make the demons think that they have a handle on him, because if they have a handle on him and they think he'll fall into line with whatever superevil shit they have for him down the road - then there's no reason for them to send anybody after him, right? Sam has shown himself to be smart enough to have figured something like this out. Please God, let this be it. Sadly, in the face of what Pamela said, I'm doubtful. Hopeful, but doubtful.

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2009-03-21 01:04 pm (UTC)(link)

Yes, I think so :D :D That has to be the case.

I would like to say that your idea of Castiel as more the military engineer type is genius! I may adopt that into my own canon.

\o/ This is pleasing to me!

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2009-03-21 01:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I still regard that scene with glowering dislike. Man, I can't believe they did that! (Actually I can, and I would have been more surprised if Uriel hadn't died, but still.)

Sadly, in the face of what Pamela said, I'm doubtful.

Me too. Ohhhh me too. Poor boys.

I read a spoiler a couple/three weeks ago that someone close to the boys was going to die and I was freaked that Kripke was maybe going to kill Bobby. I'm sad that Pam and Uriel had to go (and you're so right about the grumpy guy not needing to always be the bad guy), but I'm just so relieved that Bobby's still around to deus ex mechanic for the boys that it dulls the sting a little.

I've spun the happiest ending scenario I could for the boys. Then I factored in the Kripke effect, and had to start singing the la-la-la-la-fingers-in-ears song again.

Oh, boys.

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2009-03-22 01:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh, I think Bobby's been around long enough that he'll be safe until (almost) the end. Although I have the feeling that all bets are off when it comes to Kripke, as you say :D

I don't know how safe Bobby is. Name another cool & sympathetic character who hasn't died a horrible death. Okay...Ellen, I grant you, but we haven't seen her yet this season, so who knows what could've happened in the interim.

There is to be NO Bobby-killing. I have decreed it! And you know that Eric and I are like this:
