Slipping that bit of archangel info to Dean was definitely moving into gray territory, IMHO. And he's sympathetic to Dean, you can see it in his face, he knows what they're asking is almost too much. He's never antagonistic like the other angels are. I think he really does feel Dean's pain. And you're right, he's so close to giving in. It's fascinating.
