what was basically supposed to be a cracky, fanservicy episode
I'm not sure if it really was! I mean, there were definitely elements of the crack and fanservice in it (obv.), and they ended up being a huge part of the first half of the episode, but they ended up working with the much, much more serious story of the entire mytharc, and the larger problems that SPN brings up. One of the things I've always loved about the writing is how the most bizarre cracked-out shit can live and work together with really difficult and kind of awful shit. Like, "Yellow Fever" made me howl in places (Dean's girly screaming! Fleeing from the wee Yorkie!) but it resonated with some fairly horrible things--Dean's time in hell, his terror that he's going to go back and nothing's going to save him this time, etc. The writers do that stuff so well, I'm kind of endlessly overjoyed and pleased by it.
