.picspam: Castiel (because he's that awesome)
So I haven't had sufficient brainpower for much writing or art lately, boo and hiss :( I have one art project I'm going to try to get finished before I head for home (FRIDAY FRIDAY FRIDAY), but in the meantime, I thought it would be fun to do a proper, ginormous picspam of Cas-related awesomeness.
In order to keep the picspam from running into the gigabytes, I decided to limit myself to two images--my favorites--from each episode he's in. For the most part, I stuck to the rules, with the exceptions of 4.20 because we have both Castiel and Jimmy, and 5.03, because there was so much awesome in that episode I couldn't limit myself to only two.
Oh, and not dialup-friendly? There's about 40 images, give or take, around 700px.

SEASON FOUR
Lazarus Rising

I love how his gaze follows Bobby all the way down; he's so unconcerned about Dean behind him he can take the time to make sure Bobby stays put.

And after that totally badass entrance... He picks up a book and starts reading ♥♥hearts;
Are You There, God? It's Me, Dean Winchester

I really like how Castiel leans back against the counter here... It seems unexpectedly human and casual, or like Castiel's been waiting all night for Dean to notice he's there. The lighting is also great--Dean walking through the darkness, and Castiel standing alone in the light from the window.

Your personal space? I own it.
In the Beginning

"Hello, Dean. What were you dreaming about?" The... avidity (and almost knowingness) of his face here really gets me.

SURPRISE ANGEL! One of the things I like about Dean and Castiel's interaction--all throughout their time togeter, really--is how Castiel is perpetually a shock to Dean's system, when he pops up like that.
It's the Great Pumpkin, Sam Winchester

I just love this shot.

Half-smile/huff of laughter ♥♥♥ I constantly feel like Castiel hadn't expected to find Dean's comment funny... but he did, and he's surprised by that. Given the way their relationship develop here, with Castiel being told to take orders from Dean, this seems almost like two soldiers trying to sort things out after a battle gone bad.
I Know What You Did Last Summer

Badass entrance #2.

The episode where Cas is pretty consistently Not a Nice Guy. So sweet-looking, yet so menacing.
Heaven and Hell

Despite knowing that Cas is about to get his asses handed to him by Alastair, this is still pretty awesome right here. I love how intensely focused he is--not even Uriel's there.

Death Takes a Holiday

I have a hard time articulating why I love this... It's right after Castiel zaps Alastair, and Dean mutters "... the hell?" and Guess again comes from behind him, and Cas is there. He looks almost charged-up and pleased with himself, because yeah, he's that awesome.

Exasperated Castiel is exasperated.
On the Head of a Pin

There's something about a disheveled, bloody, and battered Castiel that pleases me. And the light on his eyes here, how he's looking up at Uriel... yes.

The lighting in this scene makes me incredibly happy, but it's Castiel's face here that gets me. He knows asking Dean to torture Alastair was wrong--he's known that all along--but also knowing that Dean had been sent in there to die adds a new layer of guilt. For me, this is the transition episode for Cas; the rest of the year he spends finding his way onto a new path.
The Monster at the End of This Book

This, combined with the previous cap from 4.01, reinforces my private belief that Castiel is part-scholar. Out of all the angels we've met so far, he seems to have been the canniest in using sigils and wards and knowing how they work (see his surprise in 4.16 when Alastair breaks out of the circle he drew).

SNEAKY CAS ♥♥♥ He knows this will get him in trouble, but it's Dean, so he does it anyway.
The Rapture

The source of many post-apocalypse fantasy endings, one where everything's okay and Dean teaches Castiel how lazy days work. I also can't shake the quiet, yet unsubstantiated conviction, that Castiel's the one who set this dream up for Dean.

Throughout this episode, there are two separate people in there: Jimmy and Castiel, and you don't even need Misha's lighter voice to tell the difference. The way he carries himself, the gestures, the expressions... You know who's in there.

Auuuugh his sad, yearning face :(

And then we're back to Castiel again. The change is just amazing, and heartbreaking, to watch.
When the Levee Breaks

A lot of people piled on Castiel for being an unrepentant asshole in this ep, but I think these two caps provide evidence that, yeah, he's making shitty choices, but he's caught between lessons from his come-to-Jesus meeting up in Heaven and knowing, on some level, what he's doing is wrong.

Like 4.02, this is an incredibly human, private moment, Castiel leaning on something for support. Despite agreeing to go along with Zachariah and the others, he seems very isolated, still.
Lucifer Rising

Just one of two brilliant, brilliant scenes. Dean's fear and frustration are beautifully communicated, and this is also, I think, the most frightened I've ever seen Castiel be. He's been startled and maybe even worried (see: Alastair), but never this vulnerable, as Dean pushes him to make the choice to fight on his side.

And Cas does, of course. GO CAS!
SEASON FIVE
Sympathy for the Devil

Back! Bad and even BAMFier than ever.

Good God, Y'all!

This is a fantastic scene here: Castiel hurt and angry and alone, and having to explain himself to Bobby and then to Dean. I did all of it for you. I think it's on the strength of that admission that Dean relents and gives him the amulet. There's a lot of pain and desperation here, and Castiel makes it look lovely.
Free to Be You and Me

I can't say why, but I love Castiel's expression here--slightly puzzled, wondering what Dean's up to. And, of course the "we've talked about this before... personal space?"

Firelight is very, very kind to him. And I love how the coloring here turned out. Yay B&W!
The End

FAVORITE SCREENCAP EVER. Next to the bitter laughter and sarcastic, I'm-smiling-because-otherwise-I'll-kill-myself smiles, Cas's expression here is almost like something his pre-fallen self would have worn: sad and quiet.

And then there's this. See what I mean?
I Believe the Children Are Our Future

I love this shot because, taken out of context, it looks like the most hideously embarrassing dinner date ever. The waiter is slow, the tablecloth is plastic, the breadsticks (when they finally come) are stale and cold, and both of them are contemplating calling themselves on their cell phones and having an "emergency" come up. Either that, or trying to escape through the bathroom.

Changing Channels

Abandon All Hope

Castiel contains multitudes: He's curious, seems to enjoy alcohol, worries about his cell phone plan (THE VOICE SAYS I'M ALMOST OUT OF MINUTES), has no tact at all... But he will also stealthily fuck your shit up, pull you out of Hell, get his own ass out of a tight spot, and do it all with that calm, intensely focused face.
B.A.M.F.

Huge fan of how well his face lights up. I've talked about this with 22by7 and Trin, and one of the very awesome things about Castiel--what makes him more awesome as the series progresses, really--is how, the more he falls and the longer he's cut off from Heaven, the more self-sufficient he is. He's more impressive now than this time last year, having his ass kicked by Alastair. Now... now he doesn't even seem to be particularly afraid of Lucifer, who could very easily stomp him out of existence, and discovering he can't exorcise demons anymore... barely a blink at that.
So, yeah, that's my picspam! Here's to a second Cas-ful half of S5!
Okay, back to grading now :( Comments and stuff are appreciated... I need to be distracted from the endless litany of "while things are different, they are also the same."
