.spn 5.20: or, the devil you DON'T
I had horrific allergies today so I had to sleep through most of Bones, but what I did catch was adorable. The previews for next week, though... why are they so bound and determined to get Hodgins and Angela back together? Honestly, I cannot understand it. Well, I can, sort of, but still.
And now, for this week's SPN.
Yes, that's right! We have had a secondary character, i.e. Crowley, who had a second episode to get some character development, have me liking him a lot more than I did in his first appearance, and... he didn't die at the end of the damn episode! Given the totally shit treatment of supporting characters in SPN, who usually die the second they're given the slightest hint of development and interest, I feel like this calls for a celebration.
Or, you know, I would celebrate IF THEY FUCKING HAD CASTIEL IN THIS EPISODE. Honest to fuck. There is a related rant about two consecutive episodes of Caslessness that I'm going to sit on because it's really not fit for public and doesn't contribute anything, and would probably make things worse. So, I'm going to concentrate on the good parts of this episode, namely, the fact that it isn't last week's episode--in fact, it's a lot better. So much better. Watching this episode was like diving into a pure, crystalline lagoon after fighting through a fetid, steaming jungle of suck. That's exactly what it was like.
First, even though it's basically a rehash of what we already know, i.e. Sam has anger management issues, I do kind of like how Sam's been called on his particular weaknesses and he finally seems to be doing something about them, like not killing demon!Brady for example. (Brief aside: BRADY OH MY GOD. Seriously, could you be scared of a demon in the body of a guy named Brady? AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA oh my god *wipes tear from eye*) Of course, the problem with this, writers, if you will notice towards the end, is that Sam gets to have the revenge he always seems to go for and kills demon!Brady (eheheheh)... It would have been a lot more interesting, and possibly a bit more constructive, to have Dean do that instead. That way Sam doesn't get to associate "getting to kill someone when I'm angry at them" with "hey, this feels good." Sammy, I suggest you take up schadenfreude. See, the benefit to schadenfreude, I've found, is that you let other people make their own misery, so it's less effort and less violence, but the rewards are just as great.
Also, Sam, you're freaking 26 years old. You need to sack up and when people tell you you're being temperamental and are definitely in the wrong by wanting to stab someone in the face, admit that they have a point without going all constipated in the face and sulking.
I'm liking Dean a lot better now, in these past two episodes actually. He seems to have a direction he can live with, literally and figuratively. Now that direction just needs to fucking lead to CAS, and I'll be even happier.
Crowley... oh, Crowley. You are a bit gay, and very manipulative, and self-centered, and totally cool as far as I'm concerned. There was a scary moment there, when Crowley mentioned he had to go flush out some demons, where I allowed myself to think "Crowley, you're so freaking awesome and I love you and you and Cas need to meet, put aside your differences, and agree to make Dean and Sam excruciatingly aware of when they're being stupid (because, Crowley, love, Cas can't do all the work; he's only one very overworked angel)" and then I realized that this thought was pretty much marking Crowley for death, so I tried to stop myself. And he lived! He lived! I'm so surprised. It's sad when your show has a terrible habit of killing off interesting characters who could further contribute to future stories that you're gratified when they let someone live.
Speaking of living... oh BOBBY NO :( :( :( There's probably some horrible unspoken rider attached to Crowley's little bargain, and Bobby seems not to be in a position where he cares a lot about the fine print. Between him and Cas, both of whom REALLY NEED TO SURVIVE and come back next year so I have something to distract me from Dean and Sam's endless codependent mangst, I have no idea what to do.
next week: THANKS FOR TELLING ME NOTHING USEFUL, PREVIEWS! But wow, I love that version of "O Death."
Also, I was going to post this with the fic I'm struggling to finish, but I just thought I'd say that my fic of doom for the Dean/Cas exchange has, at some point in the past little while, been posted :>
Also, classes are done for the semester, woo! Now to grade a pile of papers.

It's a lot like Stockholm Syndrome. Although it's entirely possible that by next week we won't have anything to be grateful for, given past precedent. :\
