John is a professor in popular culture studies, which Rodney just... just no. They watch B-movies and commercials and think X-Men represents a legitimate line of academic inquiry.

Hahahah, oh my god, John totally wrote his thesis on Back to the Future and, like, its influence on the representations of science and time travel in popular culture, didn't he? When he found out about it, Rodney's head EXPLODED.

Ha ha ha, yis! Rodney's head exploded all over his office, and then exploded again when he discovered that John actually got it published, and that his second monograph was on the politics of the Cold-War era comic book, and by "well-received" John means "won a bunch of awards."
