.community pimp; web templates/will write/art for code
"Community pimp." Huh. It sounds like something you'd have in local government. Anyway.
First of all, I am very very very excited to announce that
newkidfan has opened up
artword again. What is
artword you ask? Well, it is a challenge comm. for SGA/SG1, where artists and writers work collaboratively to produce cool fic and art. It's one of the first challenge things I ever did in SGA fandom, and one of the first "not just me" things I'd ever done as well, and I love it very much! So all artists and writers, if you are interested, the newest challenge is here! Go forth and sign up!!
Second,
oxoniensis has given me space for my graphics and it's just kind of been sitting there, hosting the occasional image, and I would really like to do something with it. The problem is, years of LJ have atrophied the small portion of my brain devoted to code. So, does anyone know of any good, cool-looking templates out there, ones that are art/graphics-site friendly (and nothing that looks commercial)? Alternately, I am also willing to swap art/fic/blood for site design :> :>
Help a community pimp, huh?

-Web Shoppe (http://www.xentrik.net/): sadly no longer updated so some of the links from the main page don't work. However they do all seem to work from the site index (http://www.xentrik.net/sitemap.php) and she has awesomely helpful and understandable articles for newbies (or people needing refreshers).
-w3schools (http://www.w3schools.com/default.asp): most of their articles are slightly more technical in nature, but they have nifty try it yourself demos for codes, where you can manipulate a code to see what'll happen. (Random example: Setting text colour in CSS (http://www.w3schools.com/css/tryit.asp?filename=trycss_color).) It's very helpful for getting the feel of a new bit of code.
Sorry for the web geeky enthusiasm. :D

Depending what kind of thing you like, you have the normal, plain type (http://www.freetemplatesonline.com/templates/category/58/) or, if you're feeling adventurous, I have a fondess for the dynamic flash template (http://www.creatingonline.com/webmaster/templates/free_website_templates.htm) - even if it is a little businessy...

But if you want ideas of what can be done with CSS, the best place to visit is CSS Zen Garden.

You've got the right idea though-- asking the loyal flist for help. :o) I'm here for moral support if you need it, since I'm in the same boat and all.
*hugs*
Good luck!
