my pictures let me show u them!

I've seen that "your week in pictures" meme going around, and it occurred to me that, while it would be fun to do, I'd never actually finish because I'm always forgetting my camera when I go out. That, and my days lately usually involve wandering between a chair in the kitchen and my desk chair, and my living room is not very picturesque.

But, speaking as one who spends a bit of time here, I like the things that happen to wander into the sphere of influence around my desk.

This is my boat hat. I've been wearing it a lot lately, not because there are boats around, but just because it seems like the thing to do. Some of it is possibly due to the humidity, which makes my hair all sorts of hideously floofy, and I'd rather wear a silly bucket hat than look like a person who's spent her morning around low-level electrical fields. Also, it reminds me of vacation and, as [livejournal.com profile] amberlynne and I have discussed, John Sheppard drinking mojitos.

OM NOM NOM

These are the best cookies ever! This is the second time I've made them and they came out as they should: flat, round, and all crackly on top, like really well done brownies. (Also [livejournal.com profile] siriaeve, the book the plate is on is the book with the menstruating men in it :>)

This is my dog. He wants my cookies and he also wants me to pay attention to him because I spend too much time paying attention to other things like the following:

Rodney = panda; John = bird of paradise; theirloveissointerspecies?

It occurred to me that Rodney has certain panda-like qualities: both are cute and cuddly, but if you mess with them, they will fuck you up. Also, Rodney likes his food predictable and, well, you can't get much more predictable than a diet of one specific plant. Also, [livejournal.com profile] bironic pointed out that John would be an excellent bird of paradise, with the bizarre plumage and even more freakish mating dance (as evidenced by the rituals of the superb bird of paradise). [Much of the preceding comes directly from the dorkbirds, and [livejournal.com profile] dogeared who caught the David Attenborough show on birds of paradise and pointed out how pecking, thwapping, and ridiculous displays as a method of flirtation clearly applies to John and Rodney, as well as tropical birds.]

So clearly, Rodney is his zoo's prize giant panda who, sadly, is bad at mating in captivity, even for a panda. John is his bird of paradise friend, who somehow escapes from the aviary on a regular basis to visit Rodney while Rodney eats bamboo, naps, and growls at his incompetent keepers. John does this weird dance that involves much hopping around and shaking his crest at Rodney, which Rodney doesn't quite understand.

This is what reading about the problem of other minds makes me think about, okay?

Speaking of other minds, I have a couple things saved to print out and post within my domain:

I lol'ed.

OMIGOD OMIGOD!! This kills me afresh every time I see it.

And the title would be? I'm intrigued.

Dang, those brownie cookies look heavenly!

They are really kind of fantastic! They were still a bit warm when I took that picture, so they were all melty.

And the title would be?

Heh, it's a collection of scholarly essays :D But the reference, if you want it, is Generation and Degeneration: Tropes of Reproduction in Literature and History from Antiquity to Early Modern Europe, ed. Valeria Finucci and Kevin Brownlee (Durham, NC and London: Duke UP, 2001).

OH GOD. Now I'm imagining Rodney as a panda cub and my lungs are refusing to work, okay. He would tumble off of things and chew on tree branches grumpily and have all this fuzzy fur and - and belly - and omg.

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2008-06-10 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
*brain shatters under the force of the cute* Oh my god, the thinking, it no longer works asd;kjdf;lkjdf. He would make all sorts of irritated noises! And sneeze a lot! And curl up into a fuzzy ball and sleep and try to ignore people and swat at them when they try to pick him up!

I have to ask, do you have a larger version of that Rodneypic from home? *panda eyes at you?*

The "omigod omigod!!" rapture on that viking's face will never fade for me. So awesome. I can just imagine a bunch of vikings pillaging their way through a cathedral and saying things like, "Oh for god's sake, Ulf, how many copes do you need? It's not like you wear them," and "Okay, that illuminated manuscript? So eighth-century."

I'm really impressed that you have the perfect pictures in which to underpin your Rodney/Panda, John/BoP agruement, I think it wins for that alone.

"Language, Mind and Culture" - I have a feeling I've read that book, or at least stolen snippets out of it for essays. Or maybe it was "Mind, Culture and Language", sometimes they all end up blurring into one.

Heh, Kövecses and Bourdieu are both pretty popular right now in my field (anything to do with translation studies is new and bright and shiny!), so I wouldn't be surprised if you have :D

AHAHAHAHA, that bird of paradise, the thwapping and the Blue Steel looks - John's spirit animal is truly a bird of paradise. Well identified.

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2008-06-10 02:03 pm (UTC)(link)
And I love how, after all of that bouncing and thwapping and display, the female bird of paradise is all ".... uh, I think I hear my cell phone ringing." And then she calls up one of her girlfriends and says, "My sister set me up with this total freak. You have to get me out of here."

And the male bird of paradise is thinking, "The breath mint, the black suit with electric blue collar, the dancing... what did I do wrong?"

The book on top of your monitor! it looks GOOD.

I rather like it so far! Zoltán Kövecses is, for a cognitive linguist, very understandable; Language, Mind, and Culture has so far been a pretty readable practical introduction to cognitive linguistics and linguistic anthropology, both fields I have very little experience in but need to know something about :D Because you do translaty things too, you might find it useful, at least as something to have in your mind somewhere. (Oh, and the ISBN is 0195187202 :>)

reciprocal thinking makes me pleased. Like panda!Rodney.

Yayyy for reciprocal pandas!

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2008-06-10 01:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Me too!!! It's soft and light and kind of weird-looking, which are three of my summer fashion requirements :D

And yes, menstruating men! :D Well, actually, they were probably men who were suffering from (among other possibilities) bleeding hemorrhoids, and the bloodflow associated with them was either compared to or understood as menstruation by the classical/medieval/early modern physicians who wrote about it.

Then modern medicine had to come along and make it boring :D

Rodney's zoo has a marketing tie-in with the movie, so they have movie posters and banners and things all over the place, and Rodney hates them. He complains about it at length to John, because really, unnecessary physical exertion is just antithetical to pandas. Stupid humans.

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2008-06-10 05:22 pm (UTC)(link)
and that bird is RIDONKULOUS in all the best ways

The best part is that the bird fails at the courtship; the female bird looks at him and is all, "uh, no I'm not giving you my number. I have to go to the ladies' room," and flies away :D

Panda!Rodney? BWAH!

And I don't know what twisty routes SGA has created in my brain, because I just thought of...

Panda!Rodney cam. Which he tolerates for precisely one day, until under cover of darkness he can laboriously climb up, mess with the feed, and have it show the zoo director's office instead. Or something. Y/N?

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2008-06-10 07:29 pm (UTC)(link)

WIN! EPIC OF GILGAMESH WIN!

I can imagine someone watching his camera on the internet at 10 at night, and then Rodney gets up and, while the person watches in amusement (the panda is MOVING!!!!), hauls himself up to where the camera's mounted. There's a moment of the camera shaking, then blackness, and then the picture resolves to an office room, possibly with incriminating activities going on inside it :>

I somehow ended up "borrowing" it from my dad, on a more or less permanent basis (since he lives 1,000 miles away). But I think you could probably find something like it at a sporting goods store or anywhere they sell beach/fishing stuff :D
