BAH

Today it occurred to me that all of my latest endeavors are mired in sinkholes of futility. This isn't precisely true, but I have nothing that seems appreciably near completion; [livejournal.com profile] sgabigbang is slogging its way through the major revision and will be picked at, in the manner of a zebra carcass, over the next month; my art has been hexed by a Photoshop that has taken to crashing on a whim; I despair of ever finishing, much less comprehending, even the most basic of the philosophy my dissertation wants; the articles are in various stages of being dismantled and reassembled into something that might, eventually, be presentable.

I'm sort of at the point where my brain has decided that, if I'm never actually going to finish anything, then I might as well find as many things to not finish as I possibly can. I had two ideas for some cover art today: both need to wait until I can get my sweaty mitts on a drawing tablet, but this hasn't stopped me from looking for stock and preliminary stuff and sketching things out. Of course, things will be finished and I know I'll be thrilled/relieved when they are, and the sooner I concentrate the sooner they will be done, but there's so much and it all seems hopelessly far away from even the hope of being completed.

So I'm writing this instead. And, as a reward for listening to my plaint, or, you know, being smart and ignoring the cut, have some John Sheppard. Hello, John.

In other news: To add to the futility, I drove down to Wolfeboro in the searing heat today, only to be bitterly disappointed by the degeneration of the town bookstore. It used to be awesome for travel and nonfiction, but now the selection is about half the size of what it was, and nowhere near the quality. What happened?!?!?

.eta: On the bright side, I have been watching Serenity and Firefly, and Jewel Staite is the most adorable thing. Also, I love Wash and for this reason am deeply resentful of Joss Whedon because I had to overcome my somewhat irrational dislike of him to watch Serenity and look what he went and did, omgwtF.

.eta2: For some reason, I was browsing around the Lewis & Short Latin Dictionary at Perseus, and looked up hiatus. In classical Latin it could mean "longing" or "desire," and I think it's sad we don't really have that usage anymore.

I have a very great hiatus for John Sheppard. Sigh.

I personally would not mind it if Madelyn changed the deadline to, oh, the second Tuesday of two weeks from now. I might be done then. *sigh*

Joss Whedon is made of awesome.

And Jewel Staite is almost too adorable.

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2008-07-10 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
To be honest, I have never really been a fan of his; I couldn't get into Buffy or Angel at all--I've never been able to watch even one episode all the way through. So Firefly seems to be the exception, which figures, since it has a handful of episodes and a movie *sigh*

But I do love Jewel Staite a whole lot :D

I never think of my favorite authors as ever having any difficulties writing. I always imagine you guys just churning out the masterpieces one after another, with just a break for chocolate in between. I know that whenever things are finished, they'll be gorgeous, as usual. &hearts

Also, put me down for a big time hiatus for Joe Flanigan. ;)

I'm so sorry. I've always loathed that stage of projects, where some of the fun things are done already & now you've got all the fiddly bits, which just aren't nearly as inspiring. *sends you John with caffeine, a drawing tablet & a pep talk*

Also, randomly: has Perseus been working for you lately? I've been getting blank pages more often than not; if I reload often enough, things will usually come up, but not always, and the mirrors are no better. The homepage promises it'll all be fixed soon, but it's been saying that for a while. Grrr.

Yes, yes! I remember the absolute hardest part of my thesis was writing the last chapter, because I had thought about it so much and I already had about 110 pages of writing done, did I really, seriously need to write any more?? I mean, seriously???

has Perseus been working for you lately?

I've always had that problem with blank pages coming up on searches (and pages for relatively short entries taking years to load). And I think that notice on the homepage has been up there ever since I started using the site, lo these many years ago; IIRC they did switch servers because the site traffic was overwhelming, especially on the Tufts servers, but I don't think that's done much of anything.

Agreed on the subject of Joss Whedon. My friend is trying to make me like Buffy. I've watched two episodes now and that show is just utterly ridiculous. I can already tell I'll never be a fan. But Firefly is so cute! I do like that show a lot. And I love Jewel Staite in it, too. Alas, I do not like her character on SGA. But we'll always have Firefly!

I also have a great hiatus for John Sheppard. I mean, come on! He looks like he's just begging for someone to come cover him with messy kisses and see what flavor lollipop he that is.

I will volunteer!

've watched two episodes now and that show is just utterly ridiculous. I can already tell I'll never be a fan.

I think for me, I'm just bizarrely picky when it comes to genre stuff--and I don't mean "picky" in the sense of "I am an elitist snot and read/watch only the best," but that some things inexplicably appeal to me and some things don't. I mean, I like SGA, for god's sake :D But urban fantasy/horror... I've never really been able to get into that. And Whedon's huge popularity has possibly provoked my usually-dormant contrariness :D

He looks like he's just begging for someone to come cover him with messy kisses and see what flavor lollipop he that is.

Oh, he totally is :>

What a pretty picture to wake up to!

I'm just discovered Firefly as well, and I love it! Kaylee is my imaginary best friend, and I think I want to be Zoe when I grow up. I can go either way on Buffy -some eps I love, but some I can't stand, and I've never been a fan of Angel, but Firefly is Shiney!

I have what knitters refer to as 'startitis'. Many many creative projects on the go, but I just can't seem to finish them!

I just watched Firefly a few weeks ago and LOVED it. And I've never been a Whedon fan, either - never watched Buffy or Angel. But it's like things that go around, because I started watching Bones for my non-fandom show, and man, I don't think that actor is physically attractive - he's not my type - but you know, I'm finding his FBI character pretty damn hot - it's all attitude and charisma, baby. Rawr. hee.

And eee! One reason I never do fic fests is that I'm terrified of them. I cannot work with deadlines on my fic because that makes me quiver. *nod* So you are a much braver woman, and I have no doubt that you will succeed magnificently.

I just watched Firefly a few weeks ago and LOVED it.

I remember when everyone was bitterly upset that the series was canceled, and thinking "Oh, what a loss *sarcasm,*" but now I can totally understand why. Stupid general viewing public!

Hi, John!

You do realise you should be sucking on something entirely different? Something attatched to a certain McKay?

And whatever, you're still made of win. No, not you John, I meant [livejournal.com profile] aesc. You go find Rodney and do that thing, and I'll reconsider.
