they call it stormy Monday

Eeeesh, we had 9 inches of rain this weekend--a drop in the bucket compared to Galveston and other places (is the entire midwest under water???), but it set a local record for most rainfall in 24 hours. Finally, finally it's cleared up and there had damn well better be some nice weather this week, that's all I'm sayin'.

Post of random:

MEME. Stolen from pretty much everyone: What, if you read my fic, is/are the characteristic(s) that stand(s) out the most? The convoluted sentences? How it vanishes from your memory even as you read it?

RL. OMFG way too busy. I had two conference abstracts due today and an appointment with the advisor to talk about my "dissertation." The good news is that the proposal is further along than I thought.

BOYS. OH MY GOD JOE. (Spoilery, probably, but STILL, OMG.)

Thus ends this post of random.

Re: the weekend. Hurricanes are no fun! My apartment still doesn't have power. Good thing my parents' live on the side of Houston with power so I can stay there.

Re: your meme. I love how your writing style evolves to bring the story to life. When it's a sweet (hot), funny piece - like Restoration Hardware or SPROING! - there is such fondness. In the more serious pieces, you craft some of the most elegant turns of phrase, and I'm always in awe.

Re: Joe. Oh my word. It is criminal how gorgeous he is. With the scruff and the tight jeans and the half-untucked shirt... GUH! He's like a model at a classic car show.

OMG!!!! You...best ever!!!! He is so hot *dieshappy*

Oh my god those JEANS. *dribbles*

I had a conference abstract due yesterday (for the zoo) and totally failed to do it. Still, I plan to go, although probably not in a student-driven van this time.

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2008-09-16 01:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I KNOW.

Yes, the zoo was one of the abstracts I got done at the 11th hour. The greater triumph, though, was beating the odds and actually getting the thing faxed in, with 1,000 other people fighting for space on the line. \o/

(And srsly, I had better see you there!!!)

I knowwww, I think my heart permanently damaged itself trying to go OMG OMG OMG.

Re: the weekend. I am happy you're safe! I've been reading about the people being evacuated from Galveston, and the neighborhoods that have been pretty much washed away and been torn between thinking "Oh, those poor people" and "At least I only live where there are tornadoes."

Re: meme. Awww, thank you! Boyyyys *siiigh*

Re: Joe. How he is so scorchingly hot should be one of the Millennium Problems, for serious. I volunteer to conduct research.

[identity profile] toft-froggy.livejournal.com 2008-09-16 05:31 pm (UTC)(link)
A heroic achievement indeed! \o/

I'd say 'I'll be there if it kills me', but the way my luck's been running, that might be tempting fate...

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2008-09-17 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, while you may wish you were dead should you have to be awake for an 8am Sunday session after spending entirely too much time at the dance, the goal of the zoo is not, in fact, to kill you.

I'll bear that in mind...

The really mellow feel they have. It's like basking in the sun.

Hope you have a happy birthday!!

I would have something useful to say here, but have been drinking (I should be banned from drinking while cooking, because I wind up hammered by 5:30 pm and have to spend the rest of the dinner hour sobering up so I can be useful that evening-- this is not the sort of lifestyle I want to lead) and so am just going to post a link, in case you did not see it, to this awesome transcript of the testimony, in 1395, of a transvestite prostitute (http://www.fordham.edu/halsall/source/1395rykener.html).

In lieu of any kind of birthday wish or greeting. Since I totally feel your pain on the whole topic by now. I had forgotten we have the same astrological sign.

Rykener further said that he often had sex as a man with many nuns and also had sex as a man with many women both married and otherwise, how many [he] did not know. Rykener further confessed that many priests had committed that vice with him as with a woman, how many [he] did not know, and said that [he] accommodated priests more readily than other people because they wished to give [him] more than others.

(You can buy John Rykener Is My Homegirl (http://www.zazzle.com/john_rykener_is_my_homegirl_shirt-235619752825366248) t-shirts, though the graphic design leaves something to be desired.)

I don't know why I thought of you in particular when I read that (via [livejournal.com profile] history_time, except that homosexuality and medievalism don't get to collide that explicitly that often. ;)

I spent a lot of time trying to figure out why SGA lends itself so well to exhaustion-fic. Was it the feeling of constantly fighting a too-powerful enemy? The isolation in the first season that drove people to just keep going because they had nothing else left? Do we need to see the characters on the edge to make it plausible that they would fall so hard for each other? And then I went, um, maybe the fact that I always stay up reading between 11 pm and 2 am before getting up to go to work at six-thirty has something to do with it :)

But, what I really wanted to say is HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!! All the best wishes for you in your new year!

I got someone else to say happy birthday, too

Rodney's all burrowed under the comforter when John enters the room. He approaches with caution and reaches out to touch what he thinks is a shoulder. "Hey, buddy." No response. Another shoulder-nudge. "Happy birthday!"

There's only a muffled noise from the bed but John can tell when he's being insulted. "Is that the way to talk to someone bringing you a gift?"

The noises increase in volume and John cuts in before things get really heated "I have coffee, too." The Rodney-bundle on the bed is quiet for so long that John's about to repeat himself but then Rodney sits up, bleary-eyed, his hair sticking out in uneven tufts that are not adorable in any way. He looks between the DVD case and the coffee-cup a few times and then up at John. He looks like he wants to say something but then he tears his gaze from John to the DVD.

Rodney tries to look disinterested and fails completely. "Hmm, ninth doctor?" he says, making a grabby hands gesture towards the disc "that's actually not completely..."

And then Rodney smiles and grabs John's t-shirt to pull him down and under the cover. John has the presence of mind to put the cup of coffee down before he gives in, snuggling close and sliding his hand under Rodney's flannel pajama jacket to feel his back, warm and strong. He tries hard not to think but he he's got, he's got this. Rodney and mornings and birthdays and...

"Happy birthday" he whispers against Rodney's neck.

What stays in my mind about your writing, is the way you take situations that might seem small and ordinary from an outsider's perspective, and then reveal them as epic and wonderful just because of the people involved. Also have a very Happy Birthday!

Awww, thank you for the kind wishes! ♥

*meep* Thank you! ♥ (Also, I think that is just the epic and wonderful nature of John and Rodney *g*)

Thank you! It was kind of rough, in a "I want a retry" sort of way, but I got through! ♥

Ohhhh, I like, I like! And there is a very good book, if you can find it, called Medieval Latin Poems of Male Love and Friendship by Thomas Stehling, and there's some juicy stuff in there :D Actually, some of it's rather sweet... the epistolary poems between Ausonius and his student Paulinus of Nola are actually quite beautiful.
