they call it stormy Monday

Eeeesh, we had 9 inches of rain this weekend--a drop in the bucket compared to Galveston and other places (is the entire midwest under water???), but it set a local record for most rainfall in 24 hours. Finally, finally it's cleared up and there had damn well better be some nice weather this week, that's all I'm sayin'.

Post of random:

MEME. Stolen from pretty much everyone: What, if you read my fic, is/are the characteristic(s) that stand(s) out the most? The convoluted sentences? How it vanishes from your memory even as you read it?

RL. OMFG way too busy. I had two conference abstracts due today and an appointment with the advisor to talk about my "dissertation." The good news is that the proposal is further along than I thought.

BOYS. OH MY GOD JOE. (Spoilery, probably, but STILL, OMG.)

Thus ends this post of random.

Your fics always have such rich detail about the characters that it is both satisfying and also leaves me craving to know so much more about them. BOOOOOOOOOOOOOYS! ♥

Your icon reminds me, I got a small plotty idea for hockey boys the other day :> :>

*grabs chest*

Good Lord woman, I was almost overwhelmed by all the Flanigan hotness. The jeans, the sunglasses, just the right amount of scruff. *flails*

Regarding your fic, I think what always strikes me is your imagery. You are very talented at drawing a picture with your words.

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2008-09-16 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
The jeans, the sunglasses, just the right amount of scruff. *flails*

He is so devastatingly good at making me do that. I'm a grown woman, dammit, Flanigan! *shakes fist*

Also, I hug you up!!! *crushing hugs for you!*

Your ability to pull up a couple of little details that make an entire scene spring to life.

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2008-09-16 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
:"> Thank you very kindly! One of the fun parts about writing John and Rodney is thinking very, very hard about a scene they're in, and picturing them in it.

[identity profile] chopchica.livejournal.com 2008-09-15 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I suck at those kinds of memes, so I'm just going to say hi. Hi! That is a shitton of rain! Where is it you live, anyway?

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2008-09-16 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
Heh, Boringsville, Indiana :D Currently, though, it is more like Bigfuckingpuddle, Indiana.

*pets emo puppy*

Why hallo thar Joe! Let me help you tuck in your shirt! ::gropes::

Your fic: Well, first there is the high pitched squeal of joy. Then there's the having to stop mid-way thru to go flail at your in a convivial manner. And then there's the part where (while everything is so sharp and beautifully real) there's this elegant little image or phrase or way of looking at things that just knocks.me.out.

So. That.

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2008-09-16 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
Nnnnnnnf, Joe, it is very unfair of you to be so hot.

*snorfles for Beads*

[identity profile] mischief5.livejournal.com 2008-09-15 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
The sheer elegance that goes into your sentence structure. You are quite the wordsmith.

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2008-09-16 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
Awww, thank you! Watch me be eloquent! *fails utterly*

[identity profile] madeline871.livejournal.com 2008-09-15 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Put aside the greatness that is Nantucket for a moment and put aside the way your gorgeous art complements the fic... Your panda and turkey fic fills me with squee.

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2008-09-16 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
Pandas! Turkeys! My dad has recently reported that the turkeys are beginning to flock together for the winter... Soon it will be Rodney vs. the bright orange vests and the snowmobiles!

[identity profile] less-star.livejournal.com 2008-09-15 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
The convoluted sentences? How it vanishes from your memory even as you read it? Oh, sweetheart, as if...;)

Well, with your BB story fresh in mind I think of the way you bring a dream-like element into your stories and make it work really well. Also, intimacy between characters (our favourite boys, of course) mmmm, you can feel it. Dear god that was incoherent, but in my defense it's two in the morning and I'm trying to finish an SG-1 kidfic. Ah, sorry.

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2008-09-16 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you very kindly! I think maybe some of that dream-like quality may be incoherence of my own... I usually write when my brain insists I should be in bed :D

(lurker here) I've said it once and I'll say it again. I love your amazing ability to spin delightful AUs. I love all of your universes, and in each of them, I fall in love with your Rodney and your John. Every time I start on an AU by you, I know I can fall in love with the characters, their background, and the world you build.

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2008-09-16 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
Aw, thank you so much! I had never been a big AU fan before SGA, but there's just something about dropping the two of them into a different world and letting them have at it :D

[identity profile] pennyplainknits.livejournal.com 2008-09-16 06:13 am (UTC)(link)
Your fic is so atmospheric, almost dreamy sometimes.

And those pictures, holy crap, with the jeans and the scruff and the sunglasses and the splayed legs....*fans self*

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2008-09-16 01:49 pm (UTC)(link)

Re: the weekend. Hurricanes are no fun! My apartment still doesn't have power. Good thing my parents' live on the side of Houston with power so I can stay there.

Re: your meme. I love how your writing style evolves to bring the story to life. When it's a sweet (hot), funny piece - like Restoration Hardware or SPROING! - there is such fondness. In the more serious pieces, you craft some of the most elegant turns of phrase, and I'm always in awe.

Re: Joe. Oh my word. It is criminal how gorgeous he is. With the scruff and the tight jeans and the half-untucked shirt... GUH! He's like a model at a classic car show.

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2008-09-16 01:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Re: the weekend. I am happy you're safe! I've been reading about the people being evacuated from Galveston, and the neighborhoods that have been pretty much washed away and been torn between thinking "Oh, those poor people" and "At least I only live where there are tornadoes."

Re: meme. Awww, thank you! Boyyyys *siiigh*

Re: Joe. How he is so scorchingly hot should be one of the Millennium Problems, for serious. I volunteer to conduct research.

[identity profile] elli.livejournal.com 2008-09-16 08:03 am (UTC)(link)

Oh my god those JEANS. *dribbles*

I had a conference abstract due yesterday (for the zoo) and totally failed to do it. Still, I plan to go, although probably not in a student-driven van this time.

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2008-09-16 01:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I KNOW.

Yes, the zoo was one of the abstracts I got done at the 11th hour. The greater triumph, though, was beating the odds and actually getting the thing faxed in, with 1,000 other people fighting for space on the line. \o/

(And srsly, I had better see you there!!!)

I would have something useful to say here, but have been drinking (I should be banned from drinking while cooking, because I wind up hammered by 5:30 pm and have to spend the rest of the dinner hour sobering up so I can be useful that evening-- this is not the sort of lifestyle I want to lead) and so am just going to post a link, in case you did not see it, to this awesome transcript of the testimony, in 1395, of a transvestite prostitute (http://www.fordham.edu/halsall/source/1395rykener.html).

In lieu of any kind of birthday wish or greeting. Since I totally feel your pain on the whole topic by now. I had forgotten we have the same astrological sign.

Rykener further said that he often had sex as a man with many nuns and also had sex as a man with many women both married and otherwise, how many [he] did not know. Rykener further confessed that many priests had committed that vice with him as with a woman, how many [he] did not know, and said that [he] accommodated priests more readily than other people because they wished to give [him] more than others.

(You can buy John Rykener Is My Homegirl (http://www.zazzle.com/john_rykener_is_my_homegirl_shirt-235619752825366248) t-shirts, though the graphic design leaves something to be desired.)

I don't know why I thought of you in particular when I read that (via [livejournal.com profile] history_time, except that homosexuality and medievalism don't get to collide that explicitly that often. ;)

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2008-09-21 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Ohhhh, I like, I like! And there is a very good book, if you can find it, called Medieval Latin Poems of Male Love and Friendship by Thomas Stehling, and there's some juicy stuff in there :D Actually, some of it's rather sweet... the epistolary poems between Ausonius and his student Paulinus of Nola are actually quite beautiful.

[identity profile] bmouse.livejournal.com 2008-09-17 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
What stays in my mind about your writing, is the way you take situations that might seem small and ordinary from an outsider's perspective, and then reveal them as epic and wonderful just because of the people involved. Also have a very Happy Birthday!

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2008-09-21 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
*meep* Thank you! ♥ (Also, I think that is just the epic and wonderful nature of John and Rodney *g*)
