.totally unscientific poll: How old am I?

[livejournal.com profile] sheafrotherdon and I were talking about how we develop a sort of "LJ age" for people we encounter online, and how sometimes that age is nowhere near the actual physical age of the person behind the LJ name. Sometimes it's amusing to find that someone has totally defied your expectations of how a person of a given age would/should/usually behaves.

So, POLL:

538.com, witness my mad scientific polling skillz!

[Poll #1301153]

Also, I invite you to behold the adorable narwhal icon.

Oh oh, and a further point of inquiry, because I saw this going around and forgot to ask: If you saw me riding by in the back of a police car, what do you think I would have been arrested for?

[identity profile] tropes.livejournal.com 2008-11-21 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
...is that Strom Thurmond. Waaaaaaah.

I can't play this game! Everybody knows how old I am!

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2008-11-21 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
He does look like he's freshly exhumed, doesn't he?

[identity profile] tropes.livejournal.com 2008-11-21 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
He looks like the body of that woman who was killed by the Scientologists. D:

[identity profile] amireal.livejournal.com 2008-11-21 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Well. I know you're an academic. But I also checked to see which box sheafrotherdon checked.

Is that cheating? :p

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2008-11-21 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
NO CHEATING BAD AMIS! *raps your wrist with her ruler*

[identity profile] amireal.livejournal.com 2008-11-21 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
*rubs wrists* Fine. *sulks*

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2008-11-21 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
Just be happy I don't report you to the academic honesty committee, young lady! *stern look*

[identity profile] dragonlady7.livejournal.com 2008-11-21 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
I'm just being a nerd. LOL. In my head you are forever twenty.

I think that police car meme is funny but can never think of any answers no matter who's asking.

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2008-11-21 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
And we are forever shivering together under our robes, listening to that hellishly boring commencement speech :D

[identity profile] tex.livejournal.com 2008-11-21 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
I checked 18-21 because every time I think someone is over 35, they turn out to be 21! If not for that, I'd guess that you're between 25 and 30.

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2008-11-21 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
Oh HALLO there, Christmas Joe :> :> :>

[identity profile] pollitt.livejournal.com 2008-11-21 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
Mmmmm, I must say, hello Joe.

[identity profile] tex.livejournal.com 2008-11-21 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
Doesn't he look festive??

[identity profile] shadowserenity.livejournal.com 2008-11-21 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
I went with 22-30 because I know you've mentioned your academic career.

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2008-11-21 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
Clever, clever :> :>

(Also, v. awesome icon... my girlcrush on Tricia Helfer has yet to abate!)

[identity profile] bitter-crimson.livejournal.com 2008-11-21 12:41 am (UTC)(link)

[identity profile] let-fate-decide.livejournal.com 2008-11-21 12:47 am (UTC)(link)

::OMG, is traumatized by Strom Thurmond::

Small fun fact, my father did the wedding rehearsal for his marriage to Mrs. Nancy Thurmond because it was such a security risk to do it in the actual church in Aiken, SC where it was to be held. Senator Thurmond's sister was a member of my father's church...sooo.

Another fun fact: three generations of a family friends of ours were chased around the senatorial desk as interns. None of them thought to warn the others, because surely the old coot would have grown out of it by now....

Police car: Public lewdness with statues.

::OMG, is traumatized by Strom Thurmond::

Who isn't?

[identity profile] beadattitude.livejournal.com 2008-11-21 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
It was odd, how, as he got older, he looked more and more like an old lizard.

Perhaps it was one of those "the truth will out" things.

[identity profile] geeklite.livejournal.com 2008-11-21 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
...that last guy isn't actually alive is he?

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2008-11-21 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
Not anymore :D

(He was alive at the time the picture was taken, however.)

[identity profile] pollitt.livejournal.com 2008-11-21 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
You are almost my twin (okay, we would be Irish twins if we were) so I have an inside tip to your age bracket :)

And, also? You would've been arrested for verbally beating down people who dared to skoff at that awesomeness that is The Hewlett, The Flan, or good literature.

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2008-11-21 07:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I should not be arrested for defending the awesomeness of the Hew,the Flan, or good literature :D :D Yet another sign of the anti-intellectual depths to which my nation has sunk *sigh*...

[identity profile] cathalin.livejournal.com 2008-11-21 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
I suspect your actual age is younger than I put you, because I remember being surprised you were as young as you are, sometime when maybe something you said revealed it somewhat? Unless I'm hallucinating, which is always possible.*g*

Honestly, I would suck at guessing many people's ages, if they didn't mention some things about their lives sometimes. For me, since I'm a wee bit on the older side *g*, I'm always surprised how young many people are, because they seem so much more together than I would have been at that age.:)

Reason for arrest? Art that was so fricking brilliant and gorgeous and powerful it caused massive controversy! :)

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2008-11-21 07:40 pm (UTC)(link)
You are very very close! At least, you are one age bracket above what I am (30 and a couple of months, woo!)

I also am bad at guessing these things... There have been cases where I've been at least ten years off someone's actual age, and have been completely stymied when I learned that they were, in most cases, much much younger than I'd thought :D

[identity profile] thistlerose.livejournal.com 2008-11-21 04:57 am (UTC)(link)
I guessed, based on your academic comments. And it occurs to me that I've known you now for eight years. How scary is that? And who is that old guy? Is that Strom?

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2008-11-21 07:35 pm (UTC)(link)
And it occurs to me that I've known you now for eight years.

Yes yes! Wow, I can't believe GW was that long ago, but whenever I do the math, I have to admit that, yes, it was that long ago. Eight years, omg.

And who is that old guy? Is that Strom?

Indeed! Although it's hard to tell if this is a pre- or post-mortem photograph :|

[identity profile] toft-froggy.livejournal.com 2008-11-21 06:10 am (UTC)(link)
I totally ticked that old guy box, but I'm guessing you're actually in your late twenties. But that's mostly from things you've said and your grad-student-ness - I'm rubbish at guessing age from posts.

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2008-11-21 07:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Soooo close! Newly-minted 30 and 2 months :D

[identity profile] mems-derynicat.livejournal.com 2008-11-21 07:07 am (UTC)(link)
Is it cheating if I actually KNOW how old you are?

Police car meme...using sarcasm/snarkiness as a weapon against the chronically stupid?

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2008-11-21 07:30 pm (UTC)(link)
That should not be against the law :( In fact, it should be encouraged

[identity profile] sapote3.livejournal.com 2008-11-21 01:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Thirty-four. You're too good at things to be very young, plus your user name has no cutesy syllables or Celtic references.

I'd maybe give it thirty-one.

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2008-11-21 07:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Sooo close! 30 :D (And I may come close to Celtic references... aesc is Old English :D)

[identity profile] slian-martreb.livejournal.com 2008-11-21 02:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Police car meme: physically assaulting your room mate?

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2008-11-21 07:00 pm (UTC)(link)
There are some times when this is in fact VERY VERY POSSIBLE a;sdlkjdf
ext_2034: (Default)

[identity profile] ainsley.livejournal.com 2008-11-22 07:07 am (UTC)(link)
I perceive you as being my age while also perceiving you as having the maturity of someone several years my senior.

(And, having now read the rest of the comments, I stand by that, as you are my age, or close enough.)

eta which is to say i was totally debating between 22-30 and 31-40, because you're 25-35.

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2008-11-22 04:11 pm (UTC)(link)
You are ballpark! And I am 30 and a handful of months :D
