.music: The apocalypse for beginners (Dean, Castiel)

Okay, so this is possibly the first fanmix I've ever done... Very likely with the exception of Robert Johnson and Chris Thomas, Dean would hate every song on here, but too bad. It's taken from music I listen to when trying to get ideas together for art and fics, and it occured to me that the lyrics of some of the songs might plot a nice trajectory from S3 through S4 and into a future where I imagine an ending that is not completely blood and pain. The final track is one of my favorites, but I kind of love everything on here.

Track Listing

Before
01. Cross Roads Blues | robert johnson
I went to the crossroad, babe, I looked east and west
Lord, I didn't have no sweet woman, ooh well, in my distress

02. Lonesome Valley | fairfield four
You've got to go to the lonesome valley
And no one else can go with you

Hell
03. Drove through Ghosts to Get Here | 65 days of static

04. Dexter | daniel licht

On Earth
05. Headlights | dispatch
Moving out of shadow
We made some wrong moves along the way

06. Some Devil | dave matthews
Some angel is stuck inside of me
But I cannot set you free

07. Ball and Chain | big brother & the holding company
Something grabbed a hold of me
And it felt just like a ball and chain.

08. Pagan Angel and a Borrowed Car | iron & wine
While with his gun the pagan angel rose to say
My love is one made to break every bended knee

09. Hard Time Killing Floor Blues | chris thomas
And the people are driftin' from door to door
Can't find no heaven, I don't care where they go

10. Top of the World | dixie chicks
I wish it had been easier instead of any longer
I wish I could have stood where you would have been proud
That won't happen now, that won't happen now

11. A Change Is Gonna Come | the band
Just like this river I've been running ever since

12. Storm | jose gonzales
As soon as the storm is over
I promise to send out for you

And After
13. Ramshackle | beck
We will go
Nowhere we know
'Til we find our one and all

14. Guitar for Crossroads | eric clapton & buddy guy

In other news: I am super excited about my Sweet Charity stuff! There are Ideas starting to foment. On a vaguely related topic, No Parachute was nominated for this monthly award-thingy over at The Readers Have Spoken(?) and if you'd like, you can vote for it here. And, on a topic not at all related to any of the above, I should probably clean stuff today.

I'm a huge fan of your art and found this post in the course of my lurking. Taking the mix; it looks absolutely fantastic. Thank you!

Nice work! Downloading. My final for my apocalypse class was on themes of the apocalypse in rock and blues, so this is awesome for more than just my listening pleasure. Love that you included Hard Time Kiling Floor Blues. Particularly interested in the ones I don't know.

Ohhhh man, I wish I could have taken that class :D :D It sounds unbelievably awesome, even if only for the rock and blues. (I actually put together a class on lament poetry, and the last section is on the blues. I'm aching to teach it one day.)

Haha, nice icon. ^ ^

Is 65 Days of Static always that awesome? Got a bit of an aphex twin thing going... are they mostly instrumental/electronic?

Also really dug Big Brother and Holding Company. Reminded me of early in-concert Zeppelin.

I finally had a chance to sit down and listen to this mix today and I wanted to let you know I thought it was fantastic; I especially appreciated the framing of the mix with Clapton. Nice touch!

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2009-04-07 04:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay, thank you so much! When I was going through my library and pulling songs, I realized that a whole lot of them were either by Clapton or Johnson. "Malted Milk Blues" and "If I Had Possession Over Judgment Day" almost made it on.

(Also, because I have been completely ridiculous about emailing, I got all your stuff for SC, and I am turning over a few possible things :D :D There might be two different stories in this, but I'm not yet sure.)

Oh my, the art alone is awesome. I'll try to download the songs, hoping that my sucky connection manages to handle it.
Thank you for sharing!

Uhm, I had to stop by again to tell you how much I love this fanmix. And I love YOU because we have the same taste only I didn't know about 65daystostatic and now thanks to YOU I'm listening to them and adoring them and I kinda want to vid to them a whole lot.
And if there's anything wallpaper sided with that pic you used here as artwork, PLEASE TELL ME WHERE IT IS, I WANT IT.
Sorry for the excitememnt, but I kind of love that pic so much...I can't even explain. Usually I'm not so crazily inspired by other people artwork! Clearly that struck a cord.

So, briefly, thank you so much for sharing, you made me happy. ♥

Awwww, thank you so much!! I got into 65days because of "Drove Through Ghosts to Get Here"; One for All Time and The Death of Math are the two albums I have, and I go through phases where I listen to them more or less constantly :D :D (And I totally think you should vid to one of their songs; they seem really appropriate for the tone of SPN, how dark and heavy the cinematography is.)

And if there's anything wallpaper sided with that pic you used here as artwork, PLEASE TELL ME WHERE IT IS, I WANT IT.

Eeep, that is as large as it comes! But I will see if I can't make it a bit bigger :D :D :D

Here via [personal profile] thandie--beautiful cover art and what a terrific mix. I knew I would love it when I saw you close with Beck's Ramshackle. And I really love all of it. But for me the big discovery is Jose Gonzales. Just, WOW. Thank you for introducing me to his music!

And now so much wonderful Dean/Cas sountrack music listening to do. Perfect for a cloudy saturday. Thank you!

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2009-04-11 06:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you so much!! I really love Beck--his music in general, but especially his quiet, slightly older work, like "Ramshackle" and "Jackass." As for Jose Gonzalez, you should really check out Veneer; I think you'll like it! ("Heartbeats" is a lot like "The Storm.")

Yay! Blues...and stuff.
Many thanks!

You gotta love the blues :D Thank you!
