.SPN 5.01; or, IT HAS BEGUN

*cue Mortal Kombat musics*

OMFG CAS! DID YOU SEE THAT? I MEAN, DID YOU FUCKING SEE THAT????

That scene made me happy. Happy in my heart, and in my pants.

Getting that out of the way, onto my usual series of incoherent notes:

Tonight was seriously surreal. I've been rewatching previous seasons and S4, so all of a sudden having new material seemed unbelievably strange to me. Good, but strange... And stranger thinking that we'll now have a whole bunch more new episodes to watch.

POSSIBLY CONTROVERSIAL FANNISH OPINION, OFF THE BAT
On one hand, I love and very much enjoy the take on the prophet Chuck/fangirls as the 21st century equivalent of a major religious movement. It appeals to my sense of the ridiculous, and also to my enjoyment of the vagaries of textual dissemination and the movement of ideas--and, oddly, it played right into some recent musings I had about how the Winchester Gospels go mainstream.

On the other hand... lay off mocking the fangirls, Kripke & co. It was fun for me once, but now it's becoming vaguely annoying, and a bit of respect (or just leaving us out altogether) would be nice. If Chuck's going to turn into a decent, somewhat-resourceful guy who does the right thing because he hates being fucked around by angels, then do the fans the same favor. On the off-chance you see this, please keep it in mind.

RET-CON?
Okay WOW, Dean as a vessel? And not just a vessel, but THE Vessel? What happened to him not being able to hear/see Cas in his true form? I'm hoping this is explained somehow, because it's kind of a big deal... If Dean isn't, um, durable enough for a regular (BUT STILL FUCKING BADASS) angel, how's he going to be a hee hee angel condom for one of the seriously badass motherfuckers? Was he still too busted up from Hell? Like Sam, does he have to grow into his abilities?

Setting logistics aside, wow. I think I've seen this tossed around before in some other fanfics, that Dean's meant to become a vessel, or somehow acquires the ability to see or hear Cas au naturel (which, I should also add, would be fucking awesome). I find the idea... intriguing, shall we say. I also find it rather intriguing that John 1.) knew what Dean is, and 2.) knew he was going to be at the storage facility. (This isn't provided by Zachariah; the prophecy is, but not the business card for the storage place.)

I continue to wonder about John Winchester, is all I'm saying. I mean, he knows shit! A lot of shit. And I'm wondering how he knows it.

PROPHECY, DESTINY, AND FREE WILL
The way the show plays with predestination intrigues me immensely. By now, prophecy is pretty clearly something that's manipulated; Z admits to planting it (DIE IN A FIRE ZACHARIAH). I'm thinking now that prophecy is distinct from destiny, the spoken word--open to manipulation and interpretation (Chuck admits he's withheld stuff from the novels)--versus the narrative that continues to its end result even when the words chosen to tell it change. It's actually rather medieval in some ways.

I also love, oh how I love, that the angels require consent, and Dean's reached the point where they can take and take and take from Dean, but he won't give them himself. Which brings me to my next point...

SACRIFICE
I had this line circling through my head the other day, Dean turning to Castiel and saying "When do I ever get to keep anything for myself?" Because his whole life has been take and take and take--his mom, Dad, Sam, maybe Bobby, Castiel--and he has nothing except himself anymore, and giving that up... Just, no. There's a difference, I think, between self-sacrifice (sending yourself to Hell for your brother) and sacrificing your self, to be part of a war that doesn't care whether you and yours live and die... but knowing you may have to sacrifice your self anyway.

I may cry now. Oh, Dean.

CAS CAS CAS CAS CAS
I AM GOING TO CAPSLOCK THIS BECAUSE OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG AND OMG YET AGAIN!!!!!!! DEAN SPENDS THE FIRST FIVE MINUTES WORRYING ABOUT HIM! I LEARNED THAT FROM MY FRIEND CAS HE SAYS TO ZACHARIAH BEFORE BANISHING HIS ASS BACK TO HEAVEN.

AND AND AND SMITEY CAS! AND A CAS WHO KNOWS HIS SIGILS AND FUCKING SMACKS ZACHARIAH AROUND LIKE I DON'T EVEN KNOW I CAN'T THERE ARE NO WORDS. IT MAKES UP FOR THE HOPEFULLY TEMPORARY LACK OF DEAN-ADMINISTERED HUGS. I JUST... HE TOTALLY KICKED ASS YOU ALL! I CANNOT SAY IT ENOUGH. AND AGAIN, TOTAL BADASS BUT HOW THE HELL IS HE ALIVE? PLEASE PLEASE WRITERS DO NOT KEEP ME IN SUSPENSE FOREVER.

LUCIFER
I am intrigued so far. General conversations Kripke's had about the show suggest a more... Paradise Lost-ish interpretation to him, which I support fully.

THE END
Oh boys :( :( :(

With the exception of telling Sam to lose his number, I pretty much agree with, oh, everything possessed!Bobby said. It needed to be said... It actually needed to be said, oh, several months ago, when Sam's head was so far up his ass he was licking his stomach. (Or rather, I think some concerns were expressed that Sam was out of control, but Sam wasn't listening. Well, Sam, this is what happens.)

Okay, I'm jittery, slightly weirded out, and I actually have papers to finish marking. They're taking longer than I thought because apparently my students have the alternate universe version of my textbook, where the author is saying the exact opposite of what he's saying in my book. *sigh* More fun later!
