.spn 4.07; or, grandma!

Okay, it's been a week again. I hate this :( The good news is, five applications are done, so I only have... eleven to go. *weeps*

Also, my roommate's extremely intrusive parents are over right now, so I was not able to pay as much attention to this episode as I would have liked. Dammit, at least the episode isn't contributing to my way-too-high levels of exhaustion and annoyance.

For those of you who are on the casting crew for movies/TV shows: Please hire actual Irish people for Irish characters, okay? Thank you.

Okay, first of all, after his abysmal, abysmal track record last season and a good part of this one, I never thought I'd say this again, but...

OH SAMMEHHHHHHH.

Admittedly, in a way I'm kind of anxious, because Sam's using pretty much the same skills he's been honing--i.e. those of deceit and misdirection, getting his opponent to see the helpless puppy eyes/emoface while he slides the knife in/goes around drinking demon blood--for a long time, but... It was a play that, pretty much, would have lost him everything if it hadn't worked out. And I kind of did a little dance of relief when Sam turned over his cards, and wanted to hug him. Again, for the first time in a long time.

Sam, you may be making me like you again. You're on notice!

I'm having a hard time deciding who I love more in this episode... Sam for saving the day, Dean for being frightened and honest/desperate enough to beg Bobby not to go, and Bobby... oh Bobby.

Overall, this episode felt way more balanced than 4.07, which was crack-heavy on the front end and grief-heavy on the back. Since I didn't have to deal with the distraction of Paris Hilton, this ep. also felt way more case-like to me, almost like S2, when the mytharc started heating up and, inevitably, the cases would come around to the Terrible Thing John had told to Dean back in the hospital. It had that great, old-school boys on a case, working together while Sam goes all emo yet badass and Dean flirts and is determined and occasionally, reluctantly emo. And Bobby, of course, with the idjits and "keep digging, grandma."

Also, old!Dean totally kicks high-school!Dean's ass. I loved him a lot. Hurray to you, old!Dean actor!

Evil person of the week: See comment above, re: Irish people playing Irish roles. Also, LFD totally spotted this, but the lady witch played the Wraith chick in SGA's "Aurora"! Huzzah, fandom collision!

Oh god, I totally suck you guys. I really did enjoy the episode quite a bit, but I'm so fucking exhausted, I can't even say anything intelligent about it. And I'm dreading next week, not because of the episode previews (OMG CRAAAACK), but I have seven more gigantic applications to get done--they're all postdocs and fellowships and want a freaking insane amount of material--and students who need to be seen and other deadline-y things and oh god, I'm just so so tired, you all, I can't even say :(

Sorry this is a dumb review.

Dumb reaction to your review: I liked it too!

Also, ditto on the Irish accent thing. I don't know what part of the island he was supposed to be from, but it made me think of the deliberately stagey accents and language actors do for Martin McDonagh plays, for real. =;
