.art: Croatoan v. 1.0 and 2.0 (Dean, Cas) PG

In the spirit of the someecard I reposted the other day, I decided I would try, for as long as I can, to post one creative thing per week--a fic, tiny bit of original and/or fanart, mix, original writing, whatever. I've been pretty unhappy with the way RL horror has managed to comprehensively fuck up my actual work (which I love) and my fanwork (which I also love), and I hereby declare that the rest of 2010 will be the Year of Getting Back on the Horse.

This week's little bit of nothing much is two rejected early drafts for Croatoan 3.1. (An inside source reveals that the title is a reference to the posted piece being the artist's third attempt at cyberpunk!Dean and Cas.) Full-size versions and some notes/rambling after the cut.

(Also just saw design-fruit has more wing tattoo vectors. WAAAAANT.)

The early drafts suffered from several problems, the first of which was how to get Dean and Castiel in the same piece together; the second was the piece with Cas only being way too cluttered even without Dean; the third was that Castiel felt way too static; and lastly, I wasn't really feeling the cyberpunk vibe from either--they were only figures in space, without a story I could understand. So, I gave up and started over with the screencap of future!Castiel kneeling by the blown-out car in "The End," imagined that someone that fierce would have cool blade-like wings, and went from there.

Come to think of it, I probably needed the entire piece to come out of "The End," because the story that developed out of "Croatoan v. 3.1" ended up being vaguely like the events that precede those in the episode. As it is, the Cas piece still feels a bit too static--you don't really know what he's doing, even though the original concept called for the piece to be the moment when Castiel's program is finishing being downloaded into Jimmy Novak's body (there is binary incorporated into the collage, streaming downward). And as for Dean... Dean looks like he belongs in some crazy medieval extra-alternate AU, where it's 1350 and knights are carrying around fully-automatic weapons. Which would actually be kind of cool, come to think of it.

[Here via Network. Hi!]

I just wanted to say that these are gorgeous. Especially Castiel with his wings spread out. The texture is stunning, and I just keep sitting here, staring.
