.spn 5.17: or, goat-breath

I'm working on a sore throat, and I am Not Pleased. God I hope it's just post-nasal drip, which is disgusting, but at least it's not tonsillitis/strep/throat ulcer/other horrifying thing.

First, though, BONES: OH MY GOD BOOTH'S POOR FACE :( :( :( My heart broke for him when they were in Sweets's office and Bones said they weren't in love with each other, and the look on his face when she said that--just the briefest cut of the camera over to him, but ohhhh he was crushed :( :( And then afterwards... I can completely empathize with Brennan, because I think I'm kind of the same way, not very in-touch with my feelings on occasion (particularly romantic love-related feelings) and terrified of screwing up and not being able to love people the way they deserve. But that empathy was what had me whimpering with frustration and pleading with my TV. AUUUUUGH.

I did really like a lot of the backsplanation stuff, some of Cam's initial uncertainty/hostility towards Brennan (although the impression I got from her first appearance was that they'd never actually met? Am I remembering right?), ANGELA and her flip-book, Caroline of the infinite awesome. Just... ARGH BRENNAN! COME ONNNNNN. For us emotionally-out-of-touch women everywhere, huh? Please? And seriously, go talk to Angela, as she will make you see the error of your ways!

Now, before I get started on the SPN review, wow, um, I was not expecting such a response to the Casifesto! I'll be (slowly) replying to comments, but in the meantime I just wanted to say thank you for reading! And looking! And stuff :)

Hm, I think I have read this fic before, where Dean decides to say yes, but only on Conditions--Conditions that include everyone he loves being taken care of and exempted from the cleansing fire/ultimate destruction/etc.

This is one of those episodes where, on one hand, I am ridiculously happy because I got things I like, but on the other I am supremely supremely irritated by other things. I'll give you the bad news first:

-"Some days you get to kill a whore." Seriously? SERIOUSLY? Like, did the writers hear what they were writing? (Obviously not; I'm going for selective deafness here.) I have no idea what to say to that. While I know that Dean is talking about a specific Whore-With-A-Capital-W (itself a terrifically skeezy concept, thank you, late-antique and early-Christian misogyny! Thank you, John of Patmos, Saint and Grade-A Lunatic Assface!), the fact that this is coming out of a mouth of a character who's been set up as The Defender of Humanity--whores presumably included in said 'humanity'--just... ARGH. That shocked me right the hell out of the episode, and it was hard to get back in. Given my other major complaint, I'm annoyed that I expended the effort.

-The end. The last time we hear about Lisa is two years ago. I hate hate hate when writers do this, drop storylines and then resurrect them out of the blue because it's convenient. For that matter, it would have been nice to see Cassie--you know, the First Love of Dean's life and all, if we're going to have Important Life-Changing Women Who Are Barely Ever Thought Of Again Once They're Left Behind. Anyway, it doesn't make sense, given 5.13, unless Michael's lying through his teeth about Dean dying/being vegetized, that Dean's saying the Big Goodbye to everyone.

Also, the rest of the end didn't surprise me very much. In a way it's appropriate, given that the theme of this season is inevitability; I think what would have surprised me would have been Dean not running off to wrap up loose ends before saying "Sure, whatever" to Michael. Now Sam and Cas will have to save him from himself. Sigh.

-Sam. JFC, Sam, the entire world, including Dean, does not revolve around you and what you need. His entire reason for Dean not saying yes? Him. Because Dean is All He Has In The World, never mind his happiest memories are of being sans Dean, and it doesn't seem to occur to him that maybe, just maybe Sam Winchester, in and of himself, isn't worth living for. You could argue that Dean, crap as his eventual move is, is actually doing what he always does: save Sam's ass, because he could possibly bring the fight to Lucifer and take him out while he's still wearing poor Nick around. Jesus, Sam, pull your head out of your goddamn ass. And speaking of heads and asses...

What I did like:

-Oh, Cas. Even drunk he will pull your asshole out of your mouth so you have an excuse for the shit that keeps coming out of your face. "Stop asking stupid questions." Also the terrible, terrible Enochian joke (that, of course, sounds funnier in Enochian... I bet he got that one from Uriel and thought--and still thinks--it was hilarious,/i>), and drinking an entire liquor store, and oh goddammit, Dean, just hug him, okay? THE BADASS ANGEL NEEDS MANLY HUGS OF CONSOLATION. And help programming his cell phone. Oh Cas, you are a badass motherfucker but you need help with technology.

-The promo from last week misled me a bit, but I really like the concept of a secret town of hunters somewhere. Just, you know, one that isn't formed and systematically destroyed by one of the harbingers of the Apocalypse.

-O HAI MICHAEL SHANKS!

-The fact that Cas misreads the situation (and I really really really wish they'd picked up on this at the end instead of Dean kiting off to be an idiot and wreck the last five minutes of the episode) in saying that he, Dean, and Sam (Sam's an abomination *SNORT*) aren't true servants of Heaven. If Dean can off the WoB, it's pretty clear that he is, and that the people on his side--Cas, maybe even Sam, abomination (ha!) or otherwise--are still okay on a level that's more important than what the angels think, and that "Heaven" isn't necessarily angelic, but something else entirely. Which, I suppose, implies God is still in the game somehow--at least, the rules are still in place regardless of what the angels and Lucifer want--but maybe I'm just hoping that so that Cas can find him and give him hell for being an asshole.

-I find SPN's attitude toward the afterlife, particularly the Christian afterlife, very interesting. As a fairly committed agnostic (can you be a committed agnostic), I'm intrigued by the argument that hoping for perfection in the next world both justifies some extremely shitty behavior (like killing your longtime family friend) and allows people to avoid serious issues in the real world. Not that carpe diem is infallible as an ethical code, but the entire concept of "fighting" for Heaven seems a lot sketchier than "look after yourself, don't hurt other people, take care of things and you'll be okay."

-Cas again. Oh my god, I love him so much. I kind of embarrass myself.

Next week: AUUUUGH OMG. These past few episode (actually, everything since 4.18, really) has been reminding me why I spent the first three and a half seasons mainlining this show after the DVDs came out, or in the case of S4, downloading ten episodes and watching them all at once. The suspense is awful, and I don't think I can take it anymore.

I'm not even gonna bother repeat the whole misogyny thing, because yeah, EPIC FAIL, YET AGAIN SHOW, but also: In case I got the previous five seasons wrong? Wasn't Dean supposed to be quite fond of women of loose morals? and yeah, maybe they 'have never had to pay for it', but seriously, between the hypocrisy and the misogyny they make it fucking difficult to endure, not even mention, enjoy the show.
Writers aside, haven't Jared or Jensen ever bothered to say: "Dude, this line, are you sure?!"

Seriously, epic fail, mostly all around.
Too little Shanks, way too much girl-from-that-one-weekend, and not enough drunk!Cas&Sam goofing around.
Ugh.
