[drabble] Hope in Exile [G]

Title: Hope in Exile
By: HF
Characters: Elrond, Gandalf, smattering of Aragorn
Universe: Pre-FotR (book)
Rating/Warnings: Not much.
Disclaimer: The genius is Tolkien's.

Notes: Inspired by a similar phrase in Alvin Lee's classic examination of Old English poetics, The Guesthouse of Eden. This is not the fic, [livejournal.com profile] mrkinch. (I hope!) I can't concentrate on anything longer at the moment, though :/

To be locked in a few days.

HOPE IN EXILE

Spring had come to Imladris, birdsong and flowers, but Elrond Peredhel felt the warmth and gladness of the season fade into cold and fear.

“The Council has been led astray,” Gandalf said. “Indeed, I know it, though how, I cannot say.”

“Saruman will not suffer challenge.”

“Suffer it he must!” Gandalf cried. “I tell you, Master Elrond, the Shadow waits; not long shall it be before it rends the world. And I fear that if we tarry from the search any longer, hope shall fade altogether.”

“Hope wanders now in exile,” Elrond said bitterly, turning away.

“Then we must call him home.”

Gorgeous, gorgeous. I love the words you have used and they are so evocative. *loves*

Always happy to see a new fic from you, even short ones like this, because you pack so much meaning and emotion into every word. This made me picture Aragorn in his lonely journeys, and also wonder at Elrond's bitterness (since surely what he requires for Arwen's sake has something to do with Hope's exile).

Thanks for sharing and hope your holidays are joyful.

Oooow - and again, ooooooow! Bitter-sweet and lovely. I can hear the voices and visualise the exchange in Elrond's library.

IMHO Isn't it nice that PJ's given us some of the visual references points to contextualise our imaginings by? Now I can see what you see;)

Absolutely wonderful! I marvel at your talent to put so much into so few words. :)

Ah yes, I'm a sucker for Hope. This is lovely. You're on break now, right? *tickles your writing bone*

Someone mentioned PJ's movie having given us visual references for this scene; that's definitely there, but for me it's the voices that come through most clearly, especially Gandalf's. Well done.

Ohhhh... wonderful! And I love those last two lines, just elegant and beautiful.
