[drabble] Hope in Exile [G]

Title: Hope in Exile
By: HF
Characters: Elrond, Gandalf, smattering of Aragorn
Universe: Pre-FotR (book)
Rating/Warnings: Not much.
Disclaimer: The genius is Tolkien's.

Notes: Inspired by a similar phrase in Alvin Lee's classic examination of Old English poetics, The Guesthouse of Eden. This is not the fic, [livejournal.com profile] mrkinch. (I hope!) I can't concentrate on anything longer at the moment, though :/

To be locked in a few days.

HOPE IN EXILE

Spring had come to Imladris, birdsong and flowers, but Elrond Peredhel felt the warmth and gladness of the season fade into cold and fear.

“The Council has been led astray,” Gandalf said. “Indeed, I know it, though how, I cannot say.”

“Saruman will not suffer challenge.”

“Suffer it he must!” Gandalf cried. “I tell you, Master Elrond, the Shadow waits; not long shall it be before it rends the world. And I fear that if we tarry from the search any longer, hope shall fade altogether.”

“Hope wanders now in exile,” Elrond said bitterly, turning away.

“Then we must call him home.”

Like I said last night, the one-word response is perfectly fine *grins and hugs you*

Now that the GRE monkey is off my back, I really hope I can settle down and concentrate on the more important things in life, like fic :D

Gorgeous, gorgeous. I love the words you have used and they are so evocative. *loves*

Thank you! *loves back* And I see there's a new fairy tale up! *bounce*

Always happy to see a new fic from you, even short ones like this, because you pack so much meaning and emotion into every word. This made me picture Aragorn in his lonely journeys, and also wonder at Elrond's bitterness (since surely what he requires for Arwen's sake has something to do with Hope's exile).

Thanks for sharing and hope your holidays are joyful.

I realized just after posting this that Elrond comes off more like movie!Elrond than book!Elrond, though I think you're right--he does need to have Aragorn out wandering around in order to keep him away from Arwen for a while longer.

Happy holidays to you!

Oooow - and again, ooooooow! Bitter-sweet and lovely. I can hear the voices and visualise the exchange in Elrond's library.

IMHO Isn't it nice that PJ's given us some of the visual references points to contextualise our imaginings by? Now I can see what you see;)

It is! I thought about where the conversation would take place, and narrowed it down to either the library or that platform where Elrond is sitting in RotK, when Arwen confronts him. I love the telescope... can imagine him sitting there and using it to watch the courses of Earendil.

Absolutely wonderful! I marvel at your talent to put so much into so few words. :)

Thanks so much, Wynterhawk! Glad you liked it :)

Ah yes, I'm a sucker for Hope. This is lovely. You're on break now, right? *tickles your writing bone*

Auuugh! Don't tickle! Don't tickle! *shrieks and squirms about wildly*

You're on break now, right?

I am indeed :) Have been having a horrific time settling down to write anything longer, but now that some pressing issues are off my mind, I'm hoping I can concentrate a bit better.

How long do you have off from school? I bet any break right now must be a good break for you :/

Ah yes, I'm a sucker for Hope.

(Am taking things in reverse order here...) So am I! What I loved about the movies was that, even though they downplayed other aspects of Aragorn's kingship, they were absolutely insistent upon associating him with hope. Lovely evocation of the Estel of the appendices.

hmm, better a delayed response than none at all, right? *g* I finally got out of the NYC area and am back upstate for about a week and a half. The first time I've ever felt like I really needed one of those long undergrad breaks and we don't get one! Curses!

I am ashamed to say that I have now had Rotk EE in my hands for 4 days now and I haven't watched it. Why, you might ask in astonishment? Harry Potter. I had to rent SS and CoS bc I bought PoA bc it was just so amazing - the way it was filmed was what got me into the HP fandom in the first place, curses on that too. Yes, I threw over Lotr for HP. However, today I am remorseful and repentant and all that so I might watch it. *sigh* I am so fickle. But movies or no, Lotr books will always be among my most favorite things.

Only a week and a half? Slavery!

I liked PoA a lot too, but its treatment of Ron really irritated me. (As you can tell, I am a Ron h0r.) Giving all of Ron's good lines to Hermione = annoying and totally unnecessary destruction of a perfectly decent character. Hff.

Someone mentioned PJ's movie having given us visual references for this scene; that's definitely there, but for me it's the voices that come through most clearly, especially Gandalf's. Well done.

Thanks, Edrys! I've never really written Gandalf, and was definitely relying a bit on Ian McKellen :)

Ohhhh... wonderful! And I love those last two lines, just elegant and beautiful.

*smooch* Hope the GRE went well!

And the GRE went very well indeed :)
