.drabbles: LotR, M7, SGA, WaT - various ratings/pairings, &c.

Below are a whole bunch of drabbles I wrote in response to prompts provided by various denizens of my flist, and I post them here for mass entertainment. Before continuing, I should warn you SG:A-type people that this is the first time ever that I've written SG:A-type things; to make matters worse, I've not read much fanfic and I'm behind on episodes--so the quality may be questionable at best. Also, I should probably provide a disclaimer for all of the following.

Mass disclaimer:
Lord of the Rings belongs to the Tolkien Estate and New Line, not me.
The Magnificent Seven belongs to MGM &c., not me.
Stargate: Atlantis belongs to SciFi &c., not me.
Without a Trace belongs to CBS &c., not me.

Spoilers are noted in the description, as are pertinent ratings/warnings and pairings.

And there you have it. Now, on with the drabbles, arranged by fandom:

LotR

For [livejournal.com profile] mrkinch, who desired "rings, bright light, [and] pretty words":
THE GATES

“Look, Legolas, how the light sings in it! More silver than the moon – the Valar would envy it.” Gimli touched one of the rings upon the gate of Minas Tirith. “The last great work of the Dwarves in the world of men.”

“Such beauty will last an Age,” Legolas said. “Surely that comforts? If not, stay until the Dwarves reveal their name for mithril, and pass the time filling Middle-earth with wonders.”

“I would sooner be welcome in Valinor.” Gimli turned back to his forge; pale fire danced across the mithril ring upon it.

“You may be,” Legolas agreed.

M7

For [livejournal.com profile] moosesal, who besought a drabble starring Vin, Ezra, and a wager of some sort:
MONOSYLLABLE

“The infuriating thing about poverty is that it is damned inconvenient.”

“Ez, we don’t need to bet money.” Vin added, “Or clothes,” when Ezra reached protectively for his jacket. “How ‘bout, if you win, I take Sunday morning patrol?”

Ezra blissfully contemplated a Sunday morning of sloth. “And in the unlikely event that you win?”

“You gotta use words that Josiah don’t have to translate for a whole day.”

“A day spent speaking as one of the plebians, the unwashed..?” Ezra sighed, torn between education and Sunday off. “Very well.”

“I’m callin’, Ez.”

“Full house.”

Vin set down his cards.

SGA

For [livejournal.com profile] mardia_, who wanted fluffy Rodney/John with Rodney freaking out over something:
LAST THINGS

He was dying. He knew and accepted that, because even Rodney McKay had to die some time, even though he wasn’t saving Atlantis from the brink of destruction or heroically rescuing a little kid, like he’d always imagined.

(And why a little kid? He hated kids.)

Wait... off track. What was happening? Dying. Yes, he was dying, mortal lethargy stealing over his limbs, life slipping from his desperate grasp.

“Rodney,” John muttered from somewhere in the darkness, “the coffee’ll be done in, like, two minutes.”

“Two minutes too late,” Rodney whispered pathetically. “My papers... save...” And he knew no more.

For [livejournal.com profile] lillyjk, who petitioned for jealous!Shep and Rodney as the object of someone's flirtation:
FURTHER ON DOWN THE ROAD

John Sheppard is a pragmatic person. He and Rodney split a long time – okay, two months – ago and he doesn’t have the right to be jealous now, so he won't be.

So he's definitely not planning the messy death of that cute science tech who’s attached herself to Rodney like a Wraith. Or telling her Rodney is his, though he’s not anymore – and good luck with flirting, sweetheart, because Rodney doesn’t pick up on anything subtler than being shoved against a wall and kissed until he suffers brain damage from oxygen deprivation.

But he’s a pragmatic person. So he won’t.

For [livejournal.com profile] verstehen, who wished to see a drabble with the prompt "We were military in the past. Never did I think we might be again":
QUONDAM

We were military in the past. Never did I think we might be again.

Pride means little to the Wraith; by the time we learned this, we (soldiers, all of us) were slaughtered. We buried our weapons, believing they bred defiance and destruction.

We have them still, but where? The elders know but do not say.

Offworlders come, telling what the Wrath have done, what they – the Atlantians – seek to do. My heart remembers pride and anger, my hand how to hold the guns they carry, though it has never held such before.

And our weapons wait in their vaults.

WaT

For [livejournal.com profile] frogy, who humbly requested Danny/Martin, with friends outside of work or lack thereof:
JUST FRIENDS

“Thanks, Rachel. ‘Bye.” Martin clicked his cell phone shut.

“Who’s Rachel?” Danny of course, leaning too far into Martin’s space, close enough to be seriously distracting.

“A friend.”

That smirk appeared instantly. “A friend?” Said with lascivious, teasing emphasis.

“From college. We’ve stayed in touch.”

“Social calls on company time?” Danny tsked.

“I called her on the Melissa Danielle case. She works for the CMEC*.”

“Oh.” Danny paused; when he spoke again it was with uncharacteristic hesitation. “So you’re just friends?”

“Yeah,” Martin said, with maybe more force than was wise, but when Danny smiled, the risk was worth it.

[* CMEC = Center for Missing and Exploited Children. (Abbreviated for the obvious purpose of saving five words.) In "The Innocents," Martin mentions that he "has a friend" at the Center who might be able to help.]

For [livejournal.com profile] le_mot_mo, who prayed for Danny/Martin, NC17, with the prompt "The pain of the mind is worse than the pain of the body":
WHAT IT IS

The pain of the mind is worse than the pain of the body.

It’s why Danny drank, to make his mind stop bleeding, stop it dripping memory over every moment.

It’s why he’s fucking Martin now, way too rough, to drown out what is as vivid as Martin moving under him – gunfire, cold concrete, blood hot and sticky – the shock of Martin’s orgasm and his own, their breath a mixture of wonder and profanity.

It’s why Martin doesn’t protest – because he knows what it is to hurt and not have scars, why he pulls Danny close, heartbeat echoing between them.

For [livejournal.com profile] lachli, who yearned for post-"Off the Tracks" (3.21) with Danny musing on the delights of forceful!Martin:
ENDS AND MEANS

You wouldn’t think it looking at him, but... wow. Even blinded by fury as he’d been, Danny had spared some amazement for the fact that the arms pulling him off Luis Vega were Martin’s.

Arousal surges at the memory of those moments – Martin unmoving, rocklike against Danny’s body – until the need’s too much, pressure and heat in his groin, and he has to go take care of it.

When he tells Martin this, Martin looks away and apologizes.

“Don’t be sorry,” Danny says. Then, because he’s evil and he really wants Martin like that in bed, adds: “Do it again.”

Addendum

For [livejournal.com profile] tanzy, who lobbied for D/M and the following quotation as a prompt: "We need not to be let alone. We need to be really bothered once in a while. How long is it since you were really bothered? About something important, about something real?" (Ray Bradbury):
SOMETHING REAL

Danny upsets him, complicates him. He’s there when Martin’s used to being alone, unbalances him with touch and laughter, more in those dark eyes than Danny ever says.

When one case gets bad, Danny offers him take-out and a baseball game, a place where happiness is possible and real life becomes unimportant. And he can have more, Martin realizes, than bad Chinese and Danny’s laughter, if he can find the courage to take it.

That’s what Danny’s eyes say, a promise huge and real in the silence between jokes and insults, and that night Martin reaches out.

And Danny’s there.

----------
Whew! That was fun :) Am out of town for a bit, but when I get back, I might do this again. Drabbles... they are so seductive.

Ezra sighed, torn between education and Sunday off. “Very well.”

Hee! That was great. Delightful bit of humor.

I really liked the last WaT drabble too. (Well, I liked them all, but that one really stood out for me.)

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2005-12-30 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you! It was quite fun to write... humor is good once in a while, and I've forgotten how much fun it is to write Ezra.

[identity profile] lillyjk.livejournal.com 2005-12-30 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
ooh, I loved every one of these, but mine extra! I would so love for you to write a full-length fic about jealousJohn. and I loved him thinking this: (especially the sweetheart bit) *snickers*

Or telling her Rodney is his, though he’s not anymore – and good luck with flirting, sweetheart, because Rodney doesn’t pick up on anything subtler than being shoved against a wall and kissed until he suffers brain damage from oxygen deprivation.

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2005-12-30 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
Yay! Very happy you liked my first crack at something Sheppard. ([livejournal.com profile] mardia_'s drabble was my first crack at something Rodney.) Don't know if I'll get around to doing a longer version, but we'll see :)

[identity profile] bornofchaos.livejournal.com 2005-12-30 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Hehe, I've been reading fic for nearly 7 years now and I'm still not sure what "drabble" and "GIP" means..but it still makes me wish I hadn't given up with that really really horrible Dawsons Creek fic I wrote when I was 16.

Anyway, very good work :) I was wondering though, if you knew of any DannySpeakingSpanish fic..hopefully naked? I've already read "Te Amo", which made me fan myself repeatedly.

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2005-12-30 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
I've been reading fic for nearly 7 years now and I'm still not sure what "drabble" and "GIP" means

A drabble, formally speaking, is any piece of narrative prose that's exactly 100 words long. I've seen it used to refer to super-short ficlets and one-shots, though.

And GIP is "Gratuitous Icon Post." I was so happy when I learned that :D

if you knew of any DannySpeakingSpanish fic..hopefully naked?

Sadly I do not. It's something that really needs to exist, and I've been pondering it myself. My Spanish skills leave much to be desired--I can read it, after a fashion, but not write it at all. Fortunately, there's an LJ community that provides fic translation... will have to avail myself of that :)

There's a (very) tiny scrap of Spanish in "Blue River," but only a couple words... not really worth filtering through a few thousand words of fic to find it.

[identity profile] bornofchaos.livejournal.com 2005-12-30 11:12 am (UTC)(link)
I'm on a big D/M kick at the moment, 'cos of my lovelylovely broadband and also because I started taking Spanish lessons a few weeks ago and realised that I didn't want to speak it with a European accent, but with a Middle/Latin American accent. Rawr.
Thanks for the GIP definition. I'm halfway through Blue Water/Biscayne at the moment :)

Yay for lovely broadband and yay for lovely D/M!

And good luck with the Spanish!

OMG SGA AND M7! Eee! I like that little drabble with Ezra and Vin. It's cute. And I love what you did with the prompt! It's sweet and and an OC and a culture and I love how you manage to pack that all into a few short lines. *g*

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2005-12-30 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you on both the SGA and M7 :D Your prompt was very evil... I don't know much about the old Atlantian culture, other than that they wore robe-type things and had a fondness for water, so decided to make something up :)

I loved your WaT Drabbles.
All of them were brilliant gems.

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2005-12-30 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed them :)

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2005-12-30 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
:D

And your icon, it is tasty.

[identity profile] mardia.livejournal.com 2005-12-30 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
*cheers* You wrote SGA! Yay! Oh, *hee* Rodney and coffee=OTP. You really should write more SGA. And WaT. Hell, I'm a fan of you writing fic, period.

Loved all of these drabbles.

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2005-12-30 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
You wrote SGA!

I did, didn't I? Might write some more in the future, though I'm still trying to figure the characters out. Martin and Danny make it difficult... they talk a lot. Especially Danny.

Head. So crowded.

I've been beyond incognito, way into theoretically non-existant territory for about a week now, but I'm braving the super-slow dial-up hell internet of rural PA to say: Oh. My. God. Rodney, John, Danny, Martin, Vin and Ezra on the same page. Plus, hey, you're writing Rodney/John and Mag 7? I must have been very good this year. Dude. My brain has phoned in to say it's dead. Thank you.

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2005-12-30 07:02 am (UTC)(link)
Dial-up??? Oh, goodness. Please tell me rural PA has advanced beyond cuneiform... :)

I must have been very good this year

*puts on Santa hat* It was kind of fun writing in a bunch of different fandoms all in one day... an interesting test of changing style and dialogue from one drabble to another. Definitely going to have to try this again.

[identity profile] carina84.livejournal.com 2005-12-30 08:50 am (UTC)(link)
Oh wow. It's amazing how you can put so much emotion in to so little words. I especially loved the first SGA and the last WaT. Beautiful :)

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2006-01-02 03:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks! I really enjoy writing drabbles... it's such a challenge to see how much I can pack in there :)

[identity profile] le-mot-mo.livejournal.com 2005-12-30 09:51 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I love all the drabbles. Even the non-WaT ones.

Of course, I especially love the one written for me. It's all I had hoped for and so much more. It fits the prompt perfectly. Thank you. *hugs*

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2006-01-02 03:48 pm (UTC)(link)
You are most welcome! *snuggles* It was fun to write, and I'm so happy you liked it :)

[identity profile] true-enough.livejournal.com 2005-12-30 09:57 am (UTC)(link)
These are all wonderfully written. But this line - their breath a mixture of wonder and profanity - is just amazing. You captured so much emotion along with carnal heat in just a few words. Really beautiful. Thank you!

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2006-01-02 03:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you so much! Am quite happy you liked that line... it's a challenge to see how much I can pack in to such a tiny space, so I'm thrilled that worked :)

They're all so good. I especially like the first SGA one, and jealous!John (I think we all know exactly how long that breakup'll last...).

As for WaT, wow. This got me: It’s why Martin doesn’t protest – because he knows what it is to hurt and not have scars, why he pulls Danny close, heartbeat echoing between them.

Beautiful.

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2006-01-02 03:43 pm (UTC)(link)
(I think we all know exactly how long that breakup'll last...)

I'm sure Sheppard will drag him into a back room somewhere and explain things to him :D

[identity profile] nekosmuse.livejournal.com 2005-12-30 02:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I only actually read the D/M ones, but much love. My favourite was the forceful!Martin one, because I like Danny's response in the end. Do it again, heh.

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2006-01-02 03:42 pm (UTC)(link)
You know he'd say something like that, too :D

[identity profile] twincy.livejournal.com 2005-12-30 03:22 pm (UTC)(link)
And he can have more, Martin realizes, than bad Chinese and Danny’s laughter, if he can find the courage to take it.

That's just beautiful- in fact, all of them are, but the last one is by far my favourite :).

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2006-01-02 03:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Aw, thank you! Glad you liked it!

And I love your icon! It is so true :)

[identity profile] twincy.livejournal.com 2006-01-02 05:48 pm (UTC)(link)
:) [livejournal.com profile] quettaser made it, not me. But it is very true ;)

[identity profile] mrkinch.livejournal.com 2005-12-30 03:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Eeeeee! what a wonderful glimpse of my first OTP, the grumpily pragmatic Dwarf and cheerfully pragmatic Elf. Thank you!

[identity profile] mrkinch.livejournal.com 2005-12-30 03:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Addendum: Eric Close? I look up the M7 tv series and I see Eric Close? (Of course I looked up the movie first, silly me, but the character names didn't match your drabble.) He was quite lovely in Now and Again and, in fact, I can easily imagine him in the Steve McQueen role.

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2006-01-02 03:40 pm (UTC)(link)
He's quite good in both, and weird as it is, N&A was my first-ever fandom, where I found out about all this craziness.

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2006-01-02 03:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee! I was casting around for something to write on the subject of rings (which is odd, because you'd figure it'd be easy in LotR...) when it occurred to me that I'd never written either Legolas or Gimli, at least that I could remember, and that you loved the two of them :)

[identity profile] carrieross.livejournal.com 2005-12-30 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Drabbles can be powerful!! I loved the ones I read (Wat, D/M) and my most loved one is WHAT IT IS
that you wrote for le_mot_mo. So touching in its strength!

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2006-01-02 03:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Aw thank you! So happy you liked them :)

The drabbles, they are quite fun.
