New graphics comm & friending jamboree!

I told myself I was only going to do this after finishing a paper, but my laundry is done, stuff has been graded, and I went out and bought new sheets, so I'm quite happy to labor under the delusion that I've been productive.

1.) New graphics journal!
There's so much crap going on in my journal I feel like I have to clean out some of the clutter. So, I present to you [livejournal.com profile] discolore, my icon/graphics community. It's sort of bare right now, but its inaugural icon post should be up in a bit (because I am going to wait until I get this paper done before allowing myself the fun of posting stuff of actual interest, like icons and fic).

So, if you are so inclined, go check it out!

2.) Friending jamboree!
Found via [livejournal.com profile] sheafrotherdon... [livejournal.com profile] setissima is hosting a friending spree thingy here. It looks like much fun, and hey, I posted!

3.) And because I haven't done a meme in eons...
Ask Me My Fandom Opinion

How it works:
1. Ask me one fandom-related question in the comments. This can be fandom specific, general, or about fandom/lj stuff/fic writing/etc. in general. Any fandom of mine. [Past or present: Now & Again, M7, Gundam Wing, HP, LotR, WaT, SGA, SPN, House]
2. Just one question, please, but it can (and perhaps should) have sub-parts.
3. That's it. It can be as normal or odd as you like.

In paper news: Please God, spork me now.

OMG! Squee! A graphic journal! How excellent. I love the name you chose. Can I add the name of your comm to my links/affiliates post in my own graphic journal [livejournal.com profile] le_mot_art? *bats eyelashes* Pretty please?

And a fandom question? Uhmm---

I've checked out the list of your fandoms and I wonder-- are your fandom interests inter-connected somehow? Do they have anything in common? Is there a reason why these shows are your favourite shows? Or is it random? Do you just watch something, decide you like it and keep on watching?

Yeah, that's a question made up of sub-parts. You did ask for them. *g*

Have fun!

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2006-11-26 07:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Can I add the name of your comm to my links/affiliates post

Sure! That would be tres cool :D Can I add you? (That's another thing I need to add: affiliates!)

Hm. *scratches head* They do tend to be linked, either by virtue of having an actor in them I like--for example, I've followed Eric Close through a few shows *g*--or else they're fandoms my flist has somehow coerced me into following. So in the case of, say, WaT, you and lillyjk, mardia, and several others, by virtue of your endless and very penetrating enthusiasm, got me into SGA (which sort of has the same dynamic going on in Danny/Martin and McKay/Sheppard). Likewise for SPN--[livejournal.com profile] smilla02 sort of dragged me in :D

Of course, my first fandom--Now and Again--was completely random. I sort of fell across Eric Close's bare torso while channel surfing one Friday night and that was it :D

[identity profile] le-mot-mo.livejournal.com 2006-11-26 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Of course you can add me. I'd love to become affiliates.

*g* Isn't it fun to be into several fandoms at the same time? I love that. Then you get to compare fandoms and come to the conclusion that some aspects never change-- like good and honest male UST. *G*

And falling across Eric Close's bare torso? Oh yeah baby! ;o)

[identity profile] le-mot-mo.livejournal.com 2006-11-26 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Oops! I forgot to ask this. I've got a button you can use to link back to le_mot_art as an affiliate. It's up in my userinfo, you can find it there. Merci beaucoup!!!

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2006-11-27 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
Yay! Thank you! As soon as I have the time, I'll whip up a proper header & affiliate buttons and everything. (Which means I'll do it tonight, probably *kicks paper*)

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2006-11-27 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
like good and honest male UST. *G*

So true! It's the universal constant ;D

[identity profile] le-mot-mo.livejournal.com 2006-11-27 05:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah-- so so so so true indeed. WORD!

[identity profile] mrsdtaylor.livejournal.com 2006-11-26 07:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh cools... ive added you to my friends list!

Have you seen mine yet? [livejournal.com profile] different_hue

*Hugs for the papers* I know you can do it.. be strong!

x xx

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2006-11-26 07:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay! I still must add you :D Can I put you on [livejournal.com profile] discolore as an affiliate?

[identity profile] mrsdtaylor.livejournal.com 2006-11-26 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Of course!! But only if I can put you on mine! Hehe!

Im working on making a button to link back... do you have one? I can stick a text link on for now if you dont have one yet! Or if you dont want to make one, whatever. Hehe.

x xx

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2006-11-26 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
No buttons, nothing fancy yet... I just set up the comm today, pasted an icon and header together, and that's about it :D I'll get around to making things look decent (pretty) soon!

And of course :D

[identity profile] cain1999.livejournal.com 2006-11-26 07:29 pm (UTC)(link)
If you had been given permission to direct one episode of Magnificent Seven which episode would it have been, why that episode and what would you have changed in the script to have everything to your satisfaction?

Now I should try and work on my own paper. ;-) It's due for Friday.

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2006-11-26 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooooh! Good question.

I think I would have liked to have directed "Working Girls," not necessarily because I would have changed anything, but because it must have been terribly fun to work on, what with the cross-dressing, J.D.'s attempt at losing his virginity, and everything :D

Oh shiny! *adds [livejournal.com profile] discolore*

I've toyed for a while with the idea of setting up a graphic journal myself, but I'm having an hard time focusing on things.

My question is just a variation of [livejournal.com profile] le_mot_mo. Have you discovered a common pattern in the characters you fall for? For example something about Vin, Martin or Sam that draws you to them? Some common personality trait -- apart from the pretty -- that you find over and over again in your fav character?

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2006-11-26 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I've toyed for a while with the idea of setting up a graphic journal myself, but I'm having an hard time focusing on things.

It's something I've been thinking about for a while now, and only just now--i.e. "just now when I really don't want to think about my papers"--have I gotten around to it :D

Have you discovered a common pattern in the characters you fall for? For example something about Vin, Martin or Sam that draws you to them?

I think I'm kind of drawn to people who look very simple, easygoing, and unassuming, but are actually terribly stubborn and independent. You picked a good threesome (NOT IN THAT WAY DIRTY PERSON!!!) to demonstrate that... Vin, Martin, and Sam all look deceptively innocent, but will stand up for themselves and kick your ass into next week if they feel they need to. Especially Sam--he looks so sweet, and that face of his could sell anything, but he's as obstinate as the day is long. Then there's also "profoundly geeky but it's fortunate for us they use their powers for good"--e.g. Sam, Martin, and Rodney McKay.

You could probably draw similar lines between, say, Danny, John Sheppard, and Dean, who are all a bit intense but hide it behind a whole lot of flirting. I like that too :D

[identity profile] smilla02.livejournal.com 2006-11-26 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
NOT IN THAT WAY DIRTY PERSON!!!

You sure? Not even thinking a tiny bit about it? No? Okay! *pouts*

;)

Anyway, I can see the similiarities between Vin, Martin and Sam. I can see them as being stubborn and hiding it behind an apparent esy-going nature. And - apart for Vin - being total geeks. It's funny, you know? Vin, I fell in love with, because he was quiet and deeply scarred, painfully honest but having a edge of darkness. Martin because I totally relate to him, I am like Martin under so many aspects it's not even funny. Sam, I think I just want to reassure him, over and over again.
I find Dean too screwed-up to compare him toother characters, but the flirting, snarky attitude is definitely something he has in common with Danny (don't know *still* about John Shepard).

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2006-11-26 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
You sure?

Just a little bit absolutely positive, yeah ;D

Martin because I totally relate to him, I am like Martin under so many aspects it's not even funny.

That's why I was attracted to Martin, too... I think I'm a lot like him, though not as cool, and my taste in ties is better XD (Er, it would be, if I had one.)

but the flirting, snarky attitude is definitely something he has in common with Danny (don't know *still* about John Shepard).

You have to have to HAVE TO know about Sheppard, because he's too cool not to know about. I like him for the same reasons I like Danny--snarky, flirty, intense underneath, and with gravity-defying hair :D

And Dean... oh, poor Dean. I've been rewatching the first season while grading stuff and want to pet him, poor screwed-up boy that he is.

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2006-11-30 07:29 am (UTC)(link)
Curses! Didn't work the first time. Tryin' again. *crosses fingers*

Okay, I've decided this can't stand anymore! I will not permit it! I've managed to coerce [livejournal.com profile] mrsdtaylor into giving SPN a go (check out my comment picspam! (http://community.livejournal.com/discolore/994.html?thread=7650#t7650)), so I'm going to introduce you to Stargate: Atlantis by way of John Sheppard and his hair.

Image

So, this is Lt. Col. John Sheppard, US Air Force. You can call him John, though. Say hi! ("Hi John!!!! You're hot!!!" John: "Why, thank you.")

And this is John's hair.

Image

John's hair either has a life of its own or requires a lot of styling gel. Fandom suspects the former. As you can tell, it's very lively (and invites comparison with Danny's hair before it got all flat and depressed).

John lives in Atlantis--

Image

--which is an ancient city built by the... well, the Ancients, an advanced human-like race. It's a pretty cool place to live. Unfortunately, the Ancients have been gone for the better part of 10,000 years after losing big-time in a war against a very nasty group of creatures called the Wraith, but I won't depress you with that right now. Instead, we'll meet more of John's friends.

So, like I was saying, John and his hair live in Atlantis with a lot of good friends.

Image

This is Ronon Dex (the guy with the hair) and Teyla Emmagan. They're both from the Pegasus Galaxy, which is where Atlantis is. Ronon is kind of new--he just joined up last season--but Teyla's been around for a while. She and John are very good, very platonic, friends.

Image

And this is Dr. Elizabeth Weir and Dr. Carson Beckett. Elizabeth is in charge of the Atlantis expedition. Carson is the chief medical officer. He's also Scottish :D

Image

And this is Dr. Rodney McKay, John's boyfriend, head of the science team.

Rodney's an astrophysicist and engineer, so he's smarter than you are. He's smarter than you and me and the rest of the planet put together and he can kill you with his brain.

Together, John and Rodney have unbelievably hot sex go running around the Pegasus Galaxy, getting into various scrapes as they try to help the Atlantis team stay alive in the face of Unbelievable Peril!!!! and against All Odds!!!!!

And there is much bantering and bickering and snarking, and crazy tech-speak, hypochondria, drama, subtext, and so much else, I can't even begin to describe it. So much fun. 3.10, one of the more recent episodes, made me freak out in almost the exact same way that the WaT S3 finale and 4.01 did. Seriously. It was great. And like WaT, the slash starts almost right out of the gate.

Hi John, hi Rodney. I'll most likely become another rabid fangirl - you may thank evil [livejournal.com profile] aesc for that - especially if I end making you make out with abound of angsting thrownin the middl for good measure.

And you evil girl, yes I'm talking to you!!! I only have a request, is there a way to have them with English subtitles? would make the catching up easier and faster.

p.s. you already starting the dragging in of flist, I think I love you, so here's something for you:

[identity profile] mrsdtaylor.livejournal.com 2006-11-30 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
HOLY OOF!!

Heheh, I think I might like this show! x xx

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2006-11-30 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
My computer just melted from all the hot. So did my brain.

*objectifies away*

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2006-11-30 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, yeah...

I'll send you an email about how (I think) you can get subtitles to the episodes. Can't do it here, though. *trots off to gmail, but not before licking the screen one more time*

Seriously, it's not fair to have two guys THAT HOT on one show. It isn't.

If you were forced (or allowed, I suppose) to wipe a genre from the face of the earth, obliterating it completely in the past, present and future, what genre would it be and why?

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2006-11-27 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
Ohhhh if such a power were mine...

It would be a toss-up between rapefic and mpreg, because I've never seen either done halfway well. I have pretty strong feelings on rapefic (as I think I told you once), but I think the subject can be treated constructively... Like I said, I've yet to see it, though.

In the face of such indecision, maybe I should go with the "cutting done to Evanesce songs" genre. Those seem to be big, and uniformly ridiculous. Yeah, I'll do that. *strikes down*

[identity profile] shadowserenity.livejournal.com 2006-11-27 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
Would you like to affiliate with my graphics lj, [livejournal.com profile] serenehorizon? :)

*heads off to the friending spree post*

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2006-11-27 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
Yay! I would love to! I'm starting to put together graphical things, and I'll set up my affiliates list soon :D

[identity profile] shadowserenity.livejournal.com 2006-11-28 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
I've added you to my affiliates list :).

[identity profile] mardia.livejournal.com 2006-11-27 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
Oooh, this is fun. *ponders*

Alright, for SGA, is there a particular backstory you keep in mind when it comes to any particular character(s)? Like, when you're writing Rodney or John, is there something that while isn't canon, might as well be for you?

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2006-11-27 06:22 pm (UTC)(link)
OOoh, good question!

I don't have anything clearly articulated for Rodney or John--at least, nothing as clear as what I've envisioned for Danny and Martin, and you know I have very definite ideas about them :D Rodney I've always envisioned as a bright kid with a terrible home life, and his intelligence just made a bad situation worse. John's perpetual issue for me is that he loves what he does, but can't stand parts of it--authority, for example. *sigh* I probably need to think more about this, yeah? *brushes off clinging plot bunnies*
