yay yay yay!

Finally finally finally, I'm through my field exams, and I am one more step closer to being Dr. [livejournal.com profile] aesc!

Only, you know, with less astrophysics. But. I do have the orange fleece and a REALLY REALLY HUGE GRIN on my face.

Now, I am going to finish my wine and spend some time in bed.

And I know this is completely ridiculous and a sad sign of where my priorities are, but I'm really really excited about being able to write about something that involves more boys than a lot of my current material does.

*hugs!* It always sucks hearing that academia gets people down--not that I think it's great and perfect and unblemished, but that the institution can really be an impediment to people pursuing what they like.

I try to treat it like fandom as much as I can: ignore the wank and keep my head down. Usually it works :D

My supervisor was an ex-nurse who'd just finished her own PhD. My thesis was exploring the ethics of cloning, so her history as a nurse was the reason they assigned me to her - even though her speciality was Nietzsche, not bioethics. She actually taught a class on bioethics to all that year's philosophy Honours students, as part of our compulsory coursework. She marked us all down for being "too philosophical". HOW CAN YOU BE "TOO PHILOSOPHICAL" WHEN YOU'RE DOING HONOURS IN PHILOSOPHY???? ARGH!!!

Actually, I think I was spoilt by my three wonderful undergrad years, learning from the best philosophy lecturers you could hope for. By the time Honours came around our campus had lost so much funding that the students on my campus had to integrate with the main campus (mostly by videolink) - which was lead by a corrupt Department Head who was lining his own pockets at the expense of the department, as well as having inappropriate relationships with students. (Heh. Ethics was obviously *not* his area of specialisation!) It became a total viper pit in there. You really *had* to keep your head down, or it would get chopped off. Vicious. *sighs* Oh, well. I still have my love for the discipline, and the skills I acquired.

I'm glad you're still getting along in there - it always makes me happy to hear of people surviving the wank and warfare and pursuing their chosen field!

That is.... really kind of ridiculous. I don't think I've ever been told I was being too... medievalish, even for classes that weren't oriented to my period. (Actually, a lot of profs. were really encouraging and liked it when I incorporated my interests into my work. I know I appreciated it a lot.)

It's depressing to realize that this sort of asshole can be found worldwide. Not that it should come as a revelation, but still. You like to cling do these things while you can.

Hoo, yeah.

Actually, he's not here anymore. When the shit started to hit the fan he bolted back to America before he could be booted out. I just feel bad for the students at Brown University (which is where I believe he ended up.) *** ETA: It's Smith, not Brown. Always get those two mixed up!

Your profs. sound cool. It's good to encourage the love!
