the insidiousness of fandom

First, new layout omg!!1! Go see eet!

Have you ever gotten to the point in your fannish obsession that a character's name is inextricably linked with that character and that character only, and the appearance of that name elsewhere is cause for much cognitive dissonance? I recently ran across a book of essays published in honor of RODNEY Hilton, a medieval historian; my first reaction was, "oh, poor John," because this collection was put together after RODNEY Hilton died, and then "but Rodney's a physicist, he would never ever be a medieval historian."

Then, of course, I started thinking about archaeologist!Rodney and some universe where Rodney is a linguist who specializes in cryptolinguistics and scripts like Proto-Elamite or Vinča. And John would be involved somehow, either as someone who sponsors Rodney's work, or maybe wants to steal it. And have sex with Rodney.

*considers*

I don't want to do any more work today :(

Nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnngh.

Also, the new layout is hawt. I want to drag him into the show and do dirty clean things to him. ;)

I would like Rodney to read me some of Catullus' really filthy stuff, in the Latin :> (Monday's discovery: Latin as read by someone with a Roman accent? Really really hot.)

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2008-05-14 06:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I reaaaallly like it :D :D I'd been missing having a header graphic, and I originally wanted something from "Tabula Rasa," with Rodney writing on his arms... but I will take dusty and banged-up Rodney any day of the week ;)

Ooooh, like Poem #15? Or just the really dirty love poetry? I remember one of my Latin profs had us read a lot of Catullus (he had written his dissertation on Catullus' erotic poetry) and the wee ickle undergrads were blushing and all sorts of awkward.

I kind of like his poem to Licinus (http://www.vroma.org/~hwalker/VRomaCatullus/050.html), where the two of them have been up writing poetry to each other, "sed toto indomitus furore lecto/uersarer, cupiens uidere lucem/ut tecum loquerer, simulque ut essem" :"> It sort of reminds me of John and Rodney sitting up late, bickering back and forth, and afterward Rodney can't sleep because he's driven to all sorts of distraction.

1) I would pay good money to read that AU, for serious.

2) Your new layout is AWESOME.

3) I have the same problem with SGA names now, too - we sang a song called "McKay" (after the hymn tune) in church choir last month, and I grinned every time we pulled it out to rehearse. Every time I meet someone named Sheppard/Sheperd/Shepherd (I'm not picky) I think "ooh, John!" Hey, makes my days a little brighter and gigglier to think that way, so I'll take it!

[identity profile] thisissirius.livejournal.com 2008-05-14 06:26 pm (UTC)(link)
your layout is awesome

*draws hearts around it*

omg! i do that all the time ;) when someone comes in with the name McKay or Sheppard on their credit cards i automatically stare at them for similarities. they probably think i'm a nutjob but you never know!

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2008-05-14 06:28 pm (UTC)(link)
1) I have to admit, that is something else I would love to write. One of my "books for fun" is Daniels and Bright's Writing Systems of the World, which is one of the best $80 I have ever spent on anything ever.

2) YAYYY thank you! I love it inordinately :">

3) My parents live about a half hour from a little town called Meredith :D This causes me no end of joy and amusement... The next time I go visit, I am definitely taking a picture of the town sign. (Also, there is a tiny airfield a few miles from their place... I like to imagine Nantucket!John flying into it every now and then.)

*is hopeless*

The really dirty love poetry. I think he'd get a kick out of it :> Especially if he were competing with John to see who could drive the other furthest to distraction.

Heeeee!! I have not met many Sheppards or McKays, but there is a McKay Ave. somewhere around here and I am sorely, sorely tempted to steal the sign :D

I think I may be going to one of those very special hells, the ones reserved for the especially disgraceful kinks. I want to see this:

Rodney is a linguist who specializes in cryptolinguistics and scripts like Proto-Elamite or Vinča

even more than I want to see this:

And have sex with Rodney.

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2008-05-14 06:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Now John reading Latin... mmmmph. I'd be dead and gone halfway through one hexameter.

Then it's unfortunate that he's murmuring it right into your ear, isn't it? :>

the ones reserved for the especially disgraceful kinks.

It is very, very sad, I agree :( :(

*tries not to daydream about Rodney bending over clay shards while transcribing symbols*

[identity profile] thisissirius.livejournal.com 2008-05-14 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)
ahaha! i meet a lot of McKay's but not a lot of Sheppard's. I do, however, meet a few Hewletts and I almost had a heartattack when she told me she had a cousin in Canada. i was like OMG, WHO!!!!!! IS HE CALLED DAVID?!!! (he wasn't).

lols. but yeah. when i went to vancouver last month we saw a McKay ave. and a McKay rd. and we had to take photo's beside the sign and be HHA! MCKAY! LOOK.

our parents didn't get it D:D:D:

Omg my brain just went to a Rodney/Paris Hilton place.

UNCLEAN! UNCLEAN! UNCLEAN!

I need a shower.

[identity profile] hilarytamar.livejournal.com 2008-05-14 06:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I just... I... It was all faintly theoretical until I read that, and then boom! There it was--a very, very concrete sort of thing, just over my right shoulder, with the soft cadences and the lilt and the... My god. I think my classics degree needs a warning label.

ETA: And if I think of Rodney doing this, I -- No. No, I need my brain, and I'm already going to several sorts of special hell thanks to this whole scenario as it is.

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2008-05-14 07:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, I would collapse right on top of him. He might get through "Passer, deliciae meae puellae," but then I would be dead.

I am more an Ovid fan than Catullus, so, you know, the Corinna poetry would kill me.

There are so many wonderful fic bunnies out there, and not nearly enough people writing them! That one would be GOLD!

Love the new layout with Dirty!Rodney. :)

Yes, I have gotten to that point.

When I looked into books on Ruby I found "The Ruby Programming Language", co-authored by David Flanagan, which is close enough for me to want to buy it - badly.

And I'm always fully on board with any story in which John wants to do something with or to Rodney - and have sex with him :D
