the insidiousness of fandom
First, new layout omg!!1! Go see eet!
Have you ever gotten to the point in your fannish obsession that a character's name is inextricably linked with that character and that character only, and the appearance of that name elsewhere is cause for much cognitive dissonance? I recently ran across a book of essays published in honor of RODNEY Hilton, a medieval historian; my first reaction was, "oh, poor John," because this collection was put together after RODNEY Hilton died, and then "but Rodney's a physicist, he would never ever be a medieval historian."
Then, of course, I started thinking about archaeologist!Rodney and some universe where Rodney is a linguist who specializes in cryptolinguistics and scripts like Proto-Elamite or VinĨa. And John would be involved somehow, either as someone who sponsors Rodney's work, or maybe wants to steal it. And have sex with Rodney.

I don't want to do any more work today :(

ETA: And if I think of Rodney doing this, I -- No. No, I need my brain, and I'm already going to several sorts of special hell thanks to this whole scenario as it is.

I am more an Ovid fan than Catullus, so, you know, the Corinna poetry would kill me.

And I don't even know what it means

It is actually not terribly sexy, on the surface :D It's something like, "Oh, sparrow, my girlfriend's pet," and is the first line of a poem where Catullus wishes that he, like the sparrow, could play in his crush's lap all day long. *cough*

I would also dearly, dearly love to hear him read Greek. Not that I can understand it, but Greek poetry is unbelievably lovely just to listen to, especially the rhythm, in-out, in-out like the waves.

Basically, I think we just want John to have an innate, incredible ability to speak dozens of different languages in a way which drives linguist!Rodney crazy. :>
