the insidiousness of fandom

First, new layout omg!!1! Go see eet!

Have you ever gotten to the point in your fannish obsession that a character's name is inextricably linked with that character and that character only, and the appearance of that name elsewhere is cause for much cognitive dissonance? I recently ran across a book of essays published in honor of RODNEY Hilton, a medieval historian; my first reaction was, "oh, poor John," because this collection was put together after RODNEY Hilton died, and then "but Rodney's a physicist, he would never ever be a medieval historian."

Then, of course, I started thinking about archaeologist!Rodney and some universe where Rodney is a linguist who specializes in cryptolinguistics and scripts like Proto-Elamite or Vinča. And John would be involved somehow, either as someone who sponsors Rodney's work, or maybe wants to steal it. And have sex with Rodney.

*considers*

I don't want to do any more work today :(

Nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnngh.

Also, the new layout is hawt. I want to drag him into the show and do dirty clean things to him. ;)

I reaaaallly like it :D :D I'd been missing having a header graphic, and I originally wanted something from "Tabula Rasa," with Rodney writing on his arms... but I will take dusty and banged-up Rodney any day of the week ;)

I would like Rodney to read me some of Catullus' really filthy stuff, in the Latin :> (Monday's discovery: Latin as read by someone with a Roman accent? Really really hot.)

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2008-05-14 06:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooooh, like Poem #15? Or just the really dirty love poetry? I remember one of my Latin profs had us read a lot of Catullus (he had written his dissertation on Catullus' erotic poetry) and the wee ickle undergrads were blushing and all sorts of awkward.

I kind of like his poem to Licinus (http://www.vroma.org/~hwalker/VRomaCatullus/050.html), where the two of them have been up writing poetry to each other, "sed toto indomitus furore lecto/uersarer, cupiens uidere lucem/ut tecum loquerer, simulque ut essem" :"> It sort of reminds me of John and Rodney sitting up late, bickering back and forth, and afterward Rodney can't sleep because he's driven to all sorts of distraction.

1) I would pay good money to read that AU, for serious.

2) Your new layout is AWESOME.

3) I have the same problem with SGA names now, too - we sang a song called "McKay" (after the hymn tune) in church choir last month, and I grinned every time we pulled it out to rehearse. Every time I meet someone named Sheppard/Sheperd/Shepherd (I'm not picky) I think "ooh, John!" Hey, makes my days a little brighter and gigglier to think that way, so I'll take it!

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2008-05-14 06:28 pm (UTC)(link)
1) I have to admit, that is something else I would love to write. One of my "books for fun" is Daniels and Bright's Writing Systems of the World, which is one of the best $80 I have ever spent on anything ever.

2) YAYYY thank you! I love it inordinately :">

3) My parents live about a half hour from a little town called Meredith :D This causes me no end of joy and amusement... The next time I go visit, I am definitely taking a picture of the town sign. (Also, there is a tiny airfield a few miles from their place... I like to imagine Nantucket!John flying into it every now and then.)

*is hopeless*

[identity profile] thisissirius.livejournal.com 2008-05-14 06:26 pm (UTC)(link)
your layout is awesome

*draws hearts around it*

omg! i do that all the time ;) when someone comes in with the name McKay or Sheppard on their credit cards i automatically stare at them for similarities. they probably think i'm a nutjob but you never know!

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2008-05-14 06:36 pm (UTC)(link)

Heeeee!! I have not met many Sheppards or McKays, but there is a McKay Ave. somewhere around here and I am sorely, sorely tempted to steal the sign :D

[identity profile] hilarytamar.livejournal.com 2008-05-14 06:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I may be going to one of those very special hells, the ones reserved for the especially disgraceful kinks. I want to see this:

Rodney is a linguist who specializes in cryptolinguistics and scripts like Proto-Elamite or Vinča

even more than I want to see this:

And have sex with Rodney.

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2008-05-14 06:41 pm (UTC)(link)

It is very, very sad, I agree :( :(

Love the new layout with Dirty!Rodney. :)

There are so many wonderful fic bunnies out there,

If only there were more hours in the day, or less work, or maybe four sets of hands so I could do everything I wanted to do *siiigh*

Linguist!Rodney pushes a lot of my buttons, majorly. He pushes them down and holds.

Yes, I have gotten to that point.

When I looked into books on Ruby I found "The Ruby Programming Language", co-authored by David Flanagan, which is close enough for me to want to buy it - badly.

And I'm always fully on board with any story in which John wants to do something with or to Rodney - and have sex with him :D

[identity profile] slian-martreb.livejournal.com 2008-05-14 07:53 pm (UTC)(link)
1) The new layout is completely made of awesome.

2) Every single time an order comes through for a Hewlett or a Flanigan or a McKay or a Sheppard (and any variation thereof) I think "Could it be?" and then it isn't. And I am sad. :(

3)John is not the stealing-other-people's-work type. But there would be sex. Because there must always be sex. Especially for John and Rodney.

4) You made a comment up there *gestures vaguely* about Rodney pushing your buttons and holding and that made me laugh. I will never understand how Sam resisted the urge to crawl all over him.

5) What did you learn about cheese today?

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2008-05-14 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
1) Woo hoo!

2) There really do need to be many more genuine Rodney McKays and John Sheppards in the world :( :(

3) Oh, I meant "steal" as in "world-class thief is hired to abscond with the work of a prominent, yet lonely, scholar," not "plagiarism." :D

4) Neither do I. Clearly there must be something wrong with her... To quote [livejournal.com profile] tropes, I'd climb him like a tree.

5.) A whole lot. Like, did you know that there are images of cheese-making in Egyptian pyramid murals from 2000BC? And that Cheddar was developed in 1500 AD?

I already told [livejournal.com profile] ladycat777 that I would pay her actual money to continue that AU.

Because my mind automatically goes from linguist->cunning linguist->you know.

I mean, Rodney is already canonically good with his hands and a fast talker. Imagine him playing the alphabet game in multiple languages! *fans self*

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2008-05-15 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
Because my mind automatically goes from linguist->cunning linguist->you know.

I have to admit, mine does too.

Also, whenever Rodney would say his specialty is linguistics, John would leer and say "oh, is it ever." Which would make Rodney roll his eyes, but also be very superior because of course he's good at linguistics ;)

Nice layout! I admire people who can make both Photoshop and LJ styles their bitch.

The other night at dinner we were told "Rodney will be your waiter tongiht," and after the hostess was gone, we giggled like idiots. Then he showed up and was tall and had a shaved head and was also Black. And very nice. So yeah, pretty much Not!Rodney.

We still giggled, but I was sleep deprived. I don't know what [livejournal.com profile] darkrosetiger's excuse was. :)

Also, I would so totally read that fic. Just sayin'.

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2008-05-15 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
I actually borrowed a layout from [livejournal.com profile] minty_peach and adapted the living daylights out of it! No way would I have been able to do the CSS all on my own, omg.

The other night at dinner we were told "Rodney will be your waiter tongiht," and after the hostess was gone, we giggled like idiots.

I love collective fangirl moments!!! I just discovered I apparently went to school with a guy named Rodney, but I don't have anyone to laugh about it with, sigh.

Rodney Hilton taught at my alma mater, and I studied in the Rodney Hilton Library - for some reason this makes me proud.

3) I totally do that with names-one of the biggest estate agents (realtors? Real Estate agents? Not sure of the American) round here is John Shepherd. I am now attempting to write a 'Rodney is searching for his dream house with the help of strangly attractive estate agent' AU. Fandom is sneaky like that.

I know that book - it came in during my last week at the library. And I totally thought the same thing. I miss the library just a little bit. My new job does not provide nearly so much John&Rodney related musing (although, I can totally see John as a cocky accountant & Rodney as the constantly-irritated filing manager.)

[identity profile] hellpenguin.livejournal.com 2008-06-03 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
it's been done before, srsly. i know, i did it. granted, it was for a challenge:

summary: If you think safaris happen only on Earth, think again. Rodney "Meredith" McKay is on a quest for ZPMs in the rain forests of So'A'Merica. He's hot on the trail of John Sheppard, his handsome, two-timing, goofy-haired soldier-for-hire who has taken a rival ZPM seeker (Radek) to the capital city of Eldor'Ado- and who unwittingly leads them all into a fiendish trap set by cunning Genii! If the men can cooperate long enough to escape from the Genii and steal their ZPM, there'll be plenty of time to settle old scores once they're back in civilization.

it's terrible, i know.
