one thing that makes me really heart-clenchy happy
I am kind of crummy-feeling today, victim to the most recent campus-wide virus and general exhaustion following two weeks of (IMHO) very unnecessary stress.
But I was thinking over one thing last night before the cough medicine kicked in, and then I thought about it this morning while slogging through the rain/sleet/snow to class.
That Rodney calls John by his first name now. After three years of rank and/or last name, John sounds so much more intimate and makes Rodney sound so much more vulnerable because it seems like he saves it for when, e.g., he's pleading with John in "Miller's Crossing" or worried for him in "Harmony" and I just... My heart! What it goddamn does to my heart! It makes it do this weird meep-clench-eeeee thing that I didn't think my cranky, slightly cynical 29-year-old heart has ever done before in its life.
I can't even be reasonable or coherent about it, I LOVE IT THAT MUCH.
♥♥♥♥♥♥♥
I know that I've read Rodney saying John in a million billion fanfics, but in canon... I am sorry, but that just makes me excessively joyful. Oh, the two of them :>

I was telling Jenns how Rodney would be bitching and bitching about how these things are antiquated social rituals whose only purposes are to reinforce the myth of American aristocracy and to provide an excuse to market marriagable young people.
And John would smirk and lean and look rakish.

And John would smirk and lean and look rakish.
Which he can totally do even while in a soaking wet designer suit.

He ditched the tie a couple of hours ago, and he's always hated collared shirts (the way they try to strangle him), so he's already got the top couple of buttons undone, and Rodney follows a drop of water down from his jaw, down down down where is pauses for a second at the rise of John's collarbone, then vanishes.

And Rodney can't figure out how he can be sopping wet with a mouth that's completely gone dry and if he doesn't following that drop with his tongue he's actually going to die right there. Not even John's lifeguard skills will save him and, oh, thinking about that certainly isn't helping.

Well, we all have to be good at something :>
And, John reflects, Rodney is pretty good, standing there with his wet shirt stretched across the shoulders Rodney hasn't quite grown into yet, blue eyes wide and intent on John's face, sharp, unexpected things in the dimness of the pool house.

Oh, they should get out of those wet clothes before they catch a cold. *nodnodnodnod*

Rodney points this out, and John nods fervently in agreement, but John's hands (his very capable at taking Rodney apart hands) are shaking, and the fourth button down goes flying.
"Hey!"
"Just put your jacket back on after," John grunts, and when he pushes Rodney's shirt off his shoulders and bends to lick Rodney's neck, distantly Rodney wonders what his chances are of surviving through to after.
