D: D: D:

There is not enough WTF in the world for this.

Before there was Summer's Eve, there was...

Again I say: D: D: D:

I mean seriously, anything that strongly suggests you use rubber gloves while applying it to various surfaces should probably not be put inside you. For all I know, Lysol might be a great feminine hygeine product, but still, what's next? Shaving your legs with a straight razor? *cringes*

And then there's this, which makes me so so happy I'm alive right now:

Just... no. No thank you. I like to think the woman's thinking, "Vitamins, and also the fact that soon I will kill you, bury you with quicklime, and run off to Tijuana."

I'll be over here now, doing... something.

Wow. I just. Huh. Wow.

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2008-02-26 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
This was what I woke up to... I hadn't even had my coffee yet. I'm still trying to decide if that's a good thing.

O_O.

Oh. No wonder my mother was always so cranky.

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2008-02-26 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously!!! I cannot imagine that being in any way pleasant or gentle. If the condition of having "close companionship" with someone was rinsing myself with household cleanser, I would very happily become a nun, thank you.

I had just logged onto my computer the first time this morning when I saw this, and I was reading, reading, "blah blah distant husband blah blah feminine hygeine blah... wait. Does that say Lysol. OH MY GOD IT DOES."

[identity profile] clear-as-blood.livejournal.com 2008-02-26 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
Wow. I'm hoping they meant a specific product by the Lysol company, rather than the stuff houses are cleaned with because that's seriously not right.

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2008-02-26 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
I'm hoping so too, but somehow... I think not :/ I've been trying to tell myself that the Lysol has to be diluted (I mean, it's in that teeny bottle, so it seems concentrated), because 200-proof Lysol douche???? Nooooo, take it awaaaay.

What year are these adverts from? I am totally using them in my women's history class

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2008-02-26 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
I don't have dates (the ads were just emailed to me by a friend who likes to see me writhe in horror), but from the info. I've looked up, the Lysol one is likely from the 1940s--there is a whole slew of them at MUM (http://www.mum.org/lysolpre.htm) (there are some other pages as well, including ads from 1948 (http://www.mum.org/Lysol48.htm) and 1928 (http://www.mum.org/lysol1.htm), and someone has a Flickr account with a Gallery of Horror (http://www.flickr.com/photos/mrbill/sets/834100/)). The Kellogg's PEP ad is probably from the 30s or 40s as well... I couldn't track down a trustworthy source; the only one I could find with a date was the Daily Mail (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/femail/article.html?in_article_id=496827&in_pa), which only says "1930s."

I was reading around on MUM.org (http://www.mum.org/Lysol48.htm) to see if I could find out when this ad was published, and apparently Lysol has properties similar to carbolic acid. That means it burns. It BURNS.

I think it wasn't scientific enough? I mean, this is from the era when people painted watch faces with radium because it glowed in the dark and was so amazing and futuristic.

And depressingly, this era was only 60-70 years ago.

she try dipping hubby's bits in it

I'm sure that's why she's smiling.

"Why honey, you smell so clean and fresh tonight!"

And tomorrow undiluted lysol on your genitals will only be the first step of the torture before I tie you up and abandon you in the garage while I skip town with all your savings.

Um, wow. I find the Lysol advertisement incredibly disturbing.

I can't honestly say that I am the best example of the feminist movement (hello, I work in a library), but the second advertisement makes me throw up a little in my mouth.

(Off topic here, but this new icon you have of John and the belly scratching? SO ADORABLE!

[identity profile] aesc.livejournal.com 2008-02-26 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
"Disturbing" is one word for it. *shudder*

but the second advertisement makes me throw up a little in my mouth.

I was a little sick myself. I'm not sure where I fall on the feminist spectrum--I tend to believe that both men and women should be equally empowered to pursue any options for life/love/career, so long as they don't involve hurting other people or animals--but still. "The harder she works, the cuter she is"??? NO. Just... no.

And oh, isn't he cute??? [livejournal.com profile] tardis80 drew him ♥ ♥

Nothing like [livejournal.com profile] vintage_ads to make you realize how lucky you are to be living now.

Of course it kind of makes you look at modern ads and wonder what people will think of them in fifty years.

Of course it kind of makes you look at modern ads and wonder what people will think of them in fifty years.

I sincerely hope the answer is "backwards and unenlightened when it comes to the importance of sexual/racial/gender equality." And I'm okay with that, because that at least suggests we'd be continuing to progress.

I'm just trying to imagine the scenario in between the first and second panels in the first ad. Like, did he roll over in bed one night and say, 'Gosh, honey, your feminine area smells great again?', or did she just throw him down and shove her groin in his face and yell, 'TASTE IT, IT'S CLEAN!' or what? I mean, she was caught in a web of indifference. I don't know that he was getting close enough to notice what she was douching with.

It's just... omfg, no! I was looking around on MUM (http://www.mum.org/facfraud2.htm)'s website, and apparently Lysol and similar products were proven to be harmful (and pretty much useless) in the 1930s, but were marketed as feminine hygeine products well into the 40s. Also, coal tar (from which Lysol is derived) was a known carcinogen in the eighteenth century.

I think I have successfully given myself nightmares enough for the next, oh, fifty years.
